Pocket 6K / 6K Pro / 6K G2 Camera Update

PostThu Jun 23, 2022 12:36 pm

Just saw the new Blackmagic Camera 7.9 update ! So cool to have added compatibility for the Pocket cameras with Zoom / Focus Demands, thanks !

However, I don't see how we could actually use the Zoom demand? Does any one know of powered EF zoom lenses that are compatible with these cameras ?

Thanks !

Canon makes several EF mount servo zoom lenses:
  • Compact-Servo CN-E 18–80mm T4.4
  • Compact-Servo CN-E 70–200mm T4.4
  • Cine-Servo 15-120mm T2.95-3.95
  • Cine-Servo 17-120mm T2.95-3.9
  • Cine-Servo 25-250mm T2.95-3.95
  • Cine-Servo 50-1000mm T5.0-8.9
None of these lenses are particularly inexpensive though (the Compact-Servo lenses are around $5k each while the Cine-Servo lenses cost more than $20k).

Some people that tried these lenses with Studio Cameras had trouble getting the zoom demand to work (the focus demand did work though). That might have been an issue with using the lens through an EF to Micro 4/3 adapter though as I believe these lenses are controllable through the camera on Canon's cinema cameras: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=153271

That's definetley good news having compatibility between the Pockets and the Zoom/Focus Demands!

BUT...

It would be even better, if not fantastic, beeing able to use the Zoom/Focus Demands on other, proper zoom lenses (with constant apertures, long focus throws etc.). Imagine the possibilities using vintage cinema zooms for example in live productions with a proper zoom rocker and focus wheel!

Sure, prerequisite would be a way of communication via USB-C between the Zoom/Focus Demands and some sort of lens control motor... Has anyone tried using the Blackmagic Zoom/Focus Demands with lets say gimbal focus motors from the likes of DJI, Zhiyun, Tilta etc. (that accept USB-C)?

Or how about a Blackmagic Design High Torque Lens Motor??

I'd be them in a heartbeat!

Through the EF pins or 12 pin Hirose connector, depends on the lens.

The 18-80mm and the 70-200mm t4.4 may work out of the box.

The others will likely take some additional integration. I spoke with a Canon rep a few weeks ago and he confirmed that the 17-120mm and the 25-250mm require external power on the 12 pin, the EF mount does not provide adequate output for either. I'm guessing the 50-1000mm is the same.

Good Luck
