New Blackmagic shuttle recorder H.264 bitrate

PostWed Jul 06, 2022 11:04 am

Hi,

I have a new Blackmagic Hyperdeck Shuttle and I am using it to archive recordings. I was very surprised to see the very large file sizes for the H.264 recordings.

It appears that the bitrates are very high. I set the recording down Low and the recordings as still over 12 mbits per sec.

This causes a problem because some the clients like to upload the recordings to YouTube and Facebook afterwards and this is taking a long time to upload.

Another issue I have is with the video quality of the jog shuttle. I have tried all 3 H.264 settings and even the ProRes and the still images and the slowmotion scrubbing resolution isn't very good.

Hyperdecks have never done very low bitrates. They’re not built for that.

Handbrake, Media Encoder, Resolve, Compressor can all make short work of squishing the files.

Alternatively use OBS/vMix or a hardware encoder to make a lower data rate version live.
