Hyperdeck Playback

PostThu Aug 04, 2022 6:50 pm

I have a perplexing issue. I use my one of my hyperdecks as a VTR for playback of pre-recorded media.

When I use Compressor or Adobe media encoder to transcode into a format playable by the hyperdeck (1080P 59.94) from my Mac with M1, it will skip frames during playback on the HD. The interesting thing is that when I render it out from AME on the M1 and then an i7 macbook using identical settings, it plays flawlessly through the HD.

Also, the file sizes are different. Here are links if anyone wants to look at this:

Here is a link of a video shot from my iphone of the playback. The first 30 seconds are the clip as rendered from the M1 and the last 30 seconds are from the i7. Playback of the i7 clip is smooth.

Here is a link to the file from the M1:

Here is a link to the file from the i7

Here is a properties screenshot from both of the files opened side by side

Please note, the exact same settings were used with the exact same file in Adobe Media Encoder. The only difference is the M1 vs i7

Also, I just did a test and rendered the clip from Davinci and the same thing is happening.

If I change the system to 1080P 29.97 and render clips they are smooth.

Any insight would be great! The M1 renders about 10x faster but if playback isn't smooth it's useless.

Best,

David

Which M1 processor are you using, is it the regular M1 or the M1 Max/M1 Pro which include on-chip hardware accelerated ProRes engines?

MediaInfo doesn't show any obvious differences between the files in terms of the codec IDs, format and other specs, although there is a slight difference in the video bitrate (which isn't too unusual for a variable bitrate codec).

One other thing I noticed about the files is that the audio is 16-bit PCM @ 48 kHz whereas I believe the HyperDecks typically record in 24-bit PCM @ 48 kHz. So it is probably worth trying the encodes with 24-bit audio to see if that makes a difference.

And you might also experiment with the other ProRes quality flavors (422 LT and 422 HQ) and see if you get any different results there.

Dave,

M1 Pro. I'll give the 24 bit audio a go. It's worth noting that when I render the clips from an i7 Mac they play flawlessly.

There's a bug somewhere. I just don't know where somewhere is yet.

Thanks!

David

Glad to know I'm not the only one with an issue. I will go back and check but I don't believe I had this issue when encoding 1080i or 1080p 29.97. I will report back later after testing.

Thanks,

David
