Studio setup with ATEM mini pro and projector

PostSat Apr 08, 2023 10:27 pm

Having some issues with my studio setup. I recently had the orginal ATEM mini overheat and die on me and I upgraded to a new ATEM mini pro, but the setup stopped working.

Here is the setup. In front of the room there is a podium that hold the ATEM mini pro hdmi. Output goes out of the podium to the wall and then to the ceiling and runs about 15 feet. From there, we have OREI HDMI over Ethernet Extender that goes another 40 ft to its receiver. The origin has a hdmi loop-out that goes to the projector. The ethernet receiver then comes out to the back of the room and runs into an ATEM mini extreme iso.

I have a good signal at the atem mini extreme with great sound as well. The issue is the projector does not appear to get a good enough signal. If I bypass the ATEM mini pro, then both the projector and ATEM mini extreme have a signal.

If I place a portable monitor in place of the projector, I get a good signal. The output of the ATEM mini pro is set to 1080P/60 which is what the project negotiates with when bypassed.

Any thoughts?

I've had enough issues with HDMI over Cat that we just stopped using it altogether, switching instead to SDI for runs over 50'.

Any chance of an upgrade?

I can understand the frustrations of HDMI over cat. In this case, I don't believe that is causing me any issues.

. Right now, the signal is clear from the atem mini to the hdmi over cat and back to the atem mini extreme. The issue is when I branch off of the HDMI over cat using the loop out to the projector.

It does not detect a good enough signal to accept the source. If I use a portable monitor at the end of that loop out, the image is fine.

I have removed the HDMI extender and took the source to the project and it fails the same way.

If I use a computer instead of the Atem mini as the source, then I get a good signal, and the projector works.

I don't understand how the signal could be strong enough to go through the HDMI over cat and be fine, but not strong enough for the 3 ft trip to the projector.

Consumer grade HDMI over Cat5 extenders (which is not Ethernet, but just uses the same type of wiring) are not reliable. The only system that really does work is HDbaseT, but only if the wiring is of sufficient quality (requirements for HDbaseT are higher than those for Gigabit Ethernet).

As Jim already mentioned: Use SDI instead. As an alternative you could have a look at fiber HDMI cables.

So here is what I have tried. I took the ATEM mini pro, attached a appletv into input one. With current wiring, I still get a signal to the back but no picture on the projector.

I have taken a 50 ft fiber optic HDMI and plugged the source side into the program out of the ATEM mini pro and then plugged it into the projector directly. No picture and no sign of a source. If the source is in the appletv, then the picture is fine.

I also tried the SDI approach with a 3 ft HDMI out of the ATEM mini pro than a Blackmagic Design Bi-Directional SDI to HDMI 3G Micro Converter with 100 ft SDI cable to a Blackmagic Design Bi-Directional SDI to HDMI 3G Micro Converter to 3 ft HDMI directly into the projector. Again no picture or sign of a signal.

I got something to work, but it is using an Accsoon Cineeye 2s pro system with the transmitter and receiver only 5 feet apart with 3 ft HDMI on each side. Using the Accsoon setup, the fiber optic HDMI and the sdi all worked.

I have the ATEM mini pro set to 1080p60, which I believe sets the output as well to that. (please correct me if I am wrong)

Any ideas?

And that is why we switched to SDI.

Unlike HDMI and Cat extenders, it pretty much just...works. ;)
