ATEM 2 M/E Input through HDMI/SDI converter

PostMon Apr 17, 2023 3:22 pm

We are trying to set up a feed from our computer (HDMI) to "Camera 16" input on the ATEM 2 M/E Production Studio 4K. We have the HDMI from the computer going through an HDMI to SDI converter. We can get the image if we plug into an SDI monitor directly, but when going through the ATEM, we get nothing on the camera 16 feed. In the preferences in the ATEM we have "Blackmagic Camera" set to "Generic"... however, we are not getting anything.

What are we missing? :?:

We already have another computer feed going to "Camera 1", but it is using the HDMI input and it is working.

These models of Atem do not have input scalars, therefore the video output resolution of the computer must match the frame rate and resolution of the Atem exactly.

IIRC it can do a conversion from 60Hz to 59.94Hz on the HDMI input only, but the other inputs need to be exactly correct. Furthermore, connecting directly means the computer will read the display requirements from the Atem - going through a converter will just result in the best signal the converter can output, not necessarily the format you need.

Thank you for your response...
Would a solution be to place a scaler, like AVMATRIX SC2030 3G-SDI/HDMI Scaling Cross Converter, address this and allow us to get a video output from the computer's HDMI that is in 1080P to an SDI input on the ATEM that would be converted to 1080i?

Yes, a scaler would do the job, but I would be checking out your display settings on the computer first. Many PC's can be told to output at 1080i broadcast friendly resolutions, and then don't require a scaler.

However, if this is something that other people will be plugging into - e.g. an on-stage laptop at a conference - I'd stick the scaler in there anyway to be on the safe side.
