Hardware MPEG-2 encoding?

PostThu Feb 06, 2014 1:12 am

Call this an odd question this day and age, but while I will certainly be getting an ATEM TS for switching, and its H.264 encoding; for an application of mine, I need hardware MPEG-2 support. Is the ATEM capable of encoding MPEG-2 with its encoding hardware, or will I be looking for a dedicated MPEG-2 (H.262) encoder? I would much prefer it on the ATEM for live capture, and not having to re-encode anything... if it can be done that way of course.

EDIT: And one more thing, is the output through USB a Transport Stream? I hope to pull the output through Linux and run it through some applications that like transport streams.

I appreciate any pointers.

You will need a dedicated MPEG-2 encoder. Not sure about the USB question...

As I feared... where is a good place to look? My Googling hasn't turned up anything too grand.

I think Thor makes a mpeg2 hardware encoder. But most people these days use software encoders. I use Adobe Media Encoder, and am pretty happy with the results. I think it also utilizes GPU acceleration if you have a good NVIDIA card.
