Live Video Streaming

PostWed Feb 19, 2014 12:20 am

Im looking to get a device that will take my HDMI out from my camera and allow me to plug into my computer and then use that input to use with a streaming program like make.tv or ustream or any of the other services for streaming. Even with youtube streaming. I am looking because the camera outputs HDMI but won't work as a webcam for streaming. What would be the best for this.

I have gotten my iPhone to work with make.tv and it does OK. I want my DSLR camera for another camera input for live events.

I have an macbook laptop and I don't have usb 3 nor do I have thunderbolt. I can update my computer because it is due time and if I do I will go with a thunderbolt inputs/outputs.

Personally, I have had issues frequently when using an input device and a computer to stream. I greatly prefer dedicated devices. To that end, there are the Matrox Monarch and the Teradek Vidiu you might want to look at before proceeding with the computer based solution. Both have HDMI inputs.

Personally, I prefer the Vidiu to the Monarch (and it is significantly cheaper), but the Monarch has the advantage of also recording an h.264 file for you onto an SDHC card. The Vidiu has the ability to control the internal settings directly on the unit, where the Monarch has to be remotely logged in to via a web browser to change any settings. This is my main gripe with the Monarch, though in certain situations - where you rarely need to alter the settings - you might even benefit from the difficulty in changing them (read:fixed location and dumb users). That is just problematic in my workflow.

Would you have a link to some copied live video from your setup? I'd love to see the quality. Sounds like a great way to do this. Do you know if it could be feed into like Google Hangouts then broadcast. I want live broadcasting and as a start that would work great. Working up small then larger.

Thanks
