Church Application: ProPresenter, Video, Projectors

PostMon Mar 03, 2014 1:53 am

Introduction
Hello everyone. This is my first post, so let me know if there is anything I can clarify or rephrase. I am currently brainstorming ideas for my church and we are looking for a product that will help us get started with Video + Slides switching. In the future, we'd like to do a lot more, but for now we need basic functionality with room for expansion.

Budget
We currently have an HD Camera and an older iMac, but we are looking to do this the "right way." Upfront, I am expecting to pay $5,000 to $6,000 for the basic setup. Within a year, I'd like to add another $6,000 to add more features.

Inputs
1. ProPresenter 5 (Lyrics, Sermon Notes, Lower Thirds, VideoClips)
2. HD Camera of Pastor giving Sermon
(3. Camera #2 in the future)
(4. Camera #3 in the future)

Outputs
1. Main Projector
2. Flat Screen #1
3. Flat Screen #2
4. HD Recording for Online Upload

Thoughts about ProPresenter
I am not sure exactly what to do to use ProP properly WITH live video. I know I will need to purchase the Alpha Key Module ($999), but their website recommends:

Blackmagic Decklink 4K Extreme card (for those w/ MacPro)
Blackmagic UltraStudio 3D - for Thunderbolt equipped Macs
Blackmagic UltraStudio 4K - for Thunderbolt equipped Macs

Right now, we do not have a switcher or anything -- and I am confused as to why we would need an "UltraStudio" PLUS an additional switcher. Is it possible to run ProP directly into a Blackmagic ATEM? (I understand the Alpha wouldn't work...) Does anyone have advice or experience with this?

Conclusion
I am ready to purchase a Blackmagic product, but I am unsure which is best for our application. If anyone has ANY advice (such as a product to start with), I would be grateful for the conversation.

Thanks,
Josh

Josh,

You will need an iMac with Thunderbolt ports to use ProPresenter with the UltraStudio 4K and the Alpha Keyer Module. I recommend getting the Fusion drive option for any iMac. The UltraStudio 3D will also work, but it has been discontinued.

If you only have one camera and no switcher, you can set the Alpha Keyer module to work in overlay (internal key) mode, which will key your Pro5 output over the live camera video passing through the UltraStudio. You will not see the video in Pro5 in this setup, so you will need other monitoring.

As soon as you have more than one camera, then you need a switcher. The Atem Television Studio sounds like it would meet your needs. With a switcher, Pro5 (with the Alpha Keyer Module) would become an input source (needs two SDI inputs) just like your cameras and the keying would happen in the switcher rather than on the UltraStudio device.

Is it possible to use the ATEM Television Studio with Pro5 (plus alpha module) without the Ultra Studio?

Josh… You need the UltraStudio 4K to get the SDI key/fill signals out of your Mac and into the switcher. The Alpha Keyer Module is useless without the UltraStudio 4K.
