Do I need an encoder to stream from ATEM to Livestream

PostTue Mar 04, 2014 11:39 pm

I am about to configure a system to stream a series of live events and will be using an ATEM TV Studio switch with Livestream. As I am creating the event do I need to hook up the output to another encoding device or will the ATEM accomplish everything I need from cameras/graphics etc to then be live on Livestream. We intend to archive the shows but we need to stream live as we switch.

I am very new to this and really look forward to expanding my experience with BMD products.

Yes, the Atem TVS will stream to livestream.com You just need to download the livestream for producers. You connect the USB output from the ATVS to a computer. Only suggestion though would be to have a dedicated computer for streaming. I'm using a MacBook Pro

In terms of archiving, you can download the final broadcast from livestream. I use a hyper deck with SSD drives.

One thing to keep in mind that there COULD be some audio drift. I've not seen this but others have wrote a lot about it.

Graphics - You know that you can only do still graphics with the tvs. You can create lower third graphics but you need to make a alpha channel to mask out the background. This will allow you to place graphics over the videos.

Once you are ready for more intense stuff - You can purchase an intensity extreme and then play graphics out of one computer into one of the free hdmi inputs. Use that input as an overlay. Keep it simple and just use white and black.

If you are doing heavy graphics, you might want to look at a play out system - "ontheair" studio express is a great solution.

I did this last friday with a TVS and livestream - new.livestream.com/fridaynightfights

any questions, please ask.

Not "Directly". You take the USB output into a computer, and stream from there. I believe there are some issues with compatibility of some USB interfaces on certain computers. Or maybe that was just with some other BMD products. Do some more searching on here for USB compatibility to answer that question. Or maybe someone else who knows will pipe in.

I really dislike how Blackmagic claims it as "streaming", when it isn't. Same goes for the h.264 mini recorder. It doesn't actually record anything. In reality, Blackmagic has ZERO products that actually stream web video or record h.264. These products encode the video, and prepare it for streaming or recording, but don't actually stream or record. It is a bit misleading.

I'm sorry... Yes you are correct. That is what I was trying to say. You connect the atem tvs to a computer via USB. you download the livestream for producer on a computer and stream thru that.

I use a MacbookPro and have no issues.
