Multiple cameras over one connection

PostTue Mar 19, 2024 6:48 pm

I am very new to this level of video routing and outputting. I have inherited a setup with a black magic atem extreme iso that is currently setup far from the stage in our tech booth. I am trying to figure out a way to install multiple cameras on stage with only 1 wire needing to be run to the tech booth as an input to the switcher. I am not sure what kinds of cameras and switchers I can add that will allow me to still control the input to output switching at the main board in the tech booth. Any basic advice here would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you are in need of a Fiber muxing solution to get multiple SDI signals Back and forth over 1 fiber cable.

We build them up to 16x 12G input and 16x 12G output over 1 fiber pair. ;)

We don’t need multiple feeds streaming at the same time. We would only ever want to output 1 sdi signal at a time so I was thinking more like a sdi switch back stage outputting 1 sdi cable to an input on the atem board we have. Wasn’t sure if the board is able to communicate with other switches so that it can remotely change the back stage switch and such

I think I figured it out. This product is also controlled by the same software/system as the black magic board so I’m assuming this could have our cameras in and 1 out going to the black magic board which it then can either use this boxes input or some of the other inputs we already have at the board and switching be triggered on both from one spot.

The black magic atem constellation hd. Would not let me post a link to it

Q: How do you switch between inputs on the Atem if there's only 1 signal coming down the pipe?

A: You don't.

The easy way to do this is to leave the switcher at the stage and use the software control in the booth. Then you'd only need the multi view and ethernet in the booth.

Good Luck

Either do it this way and add a streamdeck if you need physical buttons,
or get a SDI multicore cable like this one: SC Vector if you need to have the mixer in the booth.

There are multiple ways to skin this cat, as others have suggested. None of them involve adding an additional switcher on the stage. Unless your actual goal here is to create a Rube Goldberg machine. ;)

How many cameras are we talking? What type of cameras? (eg. operated locally, PTZ, fixed...)

What do you use this setup for? Streaming? Recording? ISO recording? IMAG?

What inputs/outputs are there other than the cameras on stage?

The answers to these questions will help inform the best solution.

There are ways to do this wireless including HDMI,
but you will probably loose Camera Control.
