Thanks for the Constellation 8K Update!

PostTue Mar 19, 2024 7:28 pm

Wanted to say a quick thanks to the folks at Blackmagic for putting out the Constellation 8K software update today.

Being able to route multiple channels of audio to the SDI output is great. And the new multiview display options are fantastic.

Thanks for listening to the user community and putting in the time and effort to backport some of the newer features to the 8K. It's much appreciated!

I updated our Constellation 8K today and I'm excited to put these new features into action during a conference we're working the next few days.

Thanks!

I just checked the update info. I saw these are new features:

Adds option for borderless Multiview.
Allows custom Multiview border colors.
Allows Multiview labels to be enabled / disabled individually.

I have a Mini Pro and an Mini Extreme and would love these features to come to those models too. I mean I'd like the audio mapping too but I realise there are probably hardware limitations. I don't see why these aesthetic multiview options shouldn't be possible though and would be really great for us Mini users.

Well yes, it took 5 years for the update. :D
Unfortunately, it's a useless update in my setup. It would have been much more convenient for me if they brought back the functionality from the old ATEM models, when the video output switched along with the embedded audio in input on the Aux output. Like a video hub. And if they also brought back timecode in audio! That would truly be boundlessly thrilling.

Tell me which atem ever had that function?? Because i'm an atem user since the first 1ME old style.. I have never seen this function in an Atem allong all the lineup for the last 12 years.. ;)
But yes i do agree that original audio from input would make my live much easier.

As for Timecode Input.. Yes please directly.. We have a lot of issues with the 2 constellations 8K slipping about 3 seconds in 12 hours compared to Realtime clock provided by our Reference generator.

And its the Constellation slipping. Because the Ref gen and Vmix stay in sync with the clock over 24h period.

I'm honestly glad that the old Rec. 709 bug is finally officially fixed.

But what I don't get is the new audio routing feature. I just updated our mixer and if I understand this right, instead of having 2 audio channels on program (stereo), you have 16 channels now, that can be configured in 8 stereo pairs and and those 7 additional stereo channels are all additional stereo channels on program. But how do I make use of them?

Are they sent out via SDI?
Can I somehow use them as "main" audio on the 4 M/Es, which would be super handy to mix multiple rooms in one mixer?
Can I somehow configure what stereo pair is sent via what SDI output, which would allow multiple live-translated languages sent out to multiple SDI outs, into dedicated WebPresenters for streaming?
Can WebPresenters receive an SDI signal with multiple audio channels via SDI and then stream them with all channels, so I can chose on the server which audio channel goes where?

I think the best use for this is for when recording. As someone who does a lot of esports events, we embed certain audio channels to certain tracks. Program is always 1/2. When you record with audio channels embeded, in post you can then say "I just want audio from this channel to play when I make this recap video." Upon loading said video into your desired editing program, you can then mute out the channels you dont want.
