+10db audio boost from X32 to Atem SDI Extreme ISO

PostWed Apr 03, 2024 2:29 pm

Hoping someone can help me figure this out. I am sending a L/R mix from the XLR Analog 1/2 output of my X32 console to the mic 1 input on the ATEM. Its set at a line level input and there is no other audio processing happening on the ATEM. My audio meter on the X32 is hitting around -10db, but the audio meter on the ATEM is right at 10db louder, meaning its meter is hitting up at 0 the whole time. This is causing distortion on my live stream. There seems to be a 10db boost happening between my x32 and the atem, but I can't figure out where or how this is happening. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!

Use RCA 5/6 on the X32 to a 1/8 stereo jack.

Either that or send XLRs via a camera.

Unfortunately that may not be possible for my setup. The mix I am sending the ATEM is coming from a X32 compact in another room, into the FOH console on the AES50B port and then routed to the XLR outputs. It doesn't look like I can route AES50B inputs to the local Aux outs, unless I'm missing something.

Could you help me understand the difference between the RCA outs and the XLR outs, why that would make a difference?

RCA tape outs are often -10dbu vs. XLR line outs which are primarily +4dbu. Should be a simple matter to duck the level in the audio mixer.

Good Luck

What problem is with -10 dB .. add precision limiter to output (im normaly using any bus pair) and select output to -10 dB

As some others have already explained, it's due to the difference in line levels. But I wanted to add to that.

Line level on professional equipment (like your X32) is +4 dBu.
Line level on consumer equipment (like the ATEM) is -10 dBV.

Besides the different numbers (+4 vs. -10), please also note the different units (dBu vs. dBV). dBu is a scale where 0 dBu is equal to 0.775 Volt. This was deliberately chosen to be equal to 0 dBm and this is the voltage required to dissipate 1 mW of power in a 600 Ohm resistor (this comes from the telecom world). On the other hand, on the dBV scale 0 dBV is equal to 1 Volt. Because of the different scales the difference between +4 dBu and -10 dBV is about 12 dBu.

So you will need to attenuate the output of your X32 mixer by 12 dBu. If you still like to run your main L/R outputs at it's normal level you can use the AUX outputs on the X32 and apply the 12 dBu attenuation there so that 0 dBu on the meters of your X32 mixer is equal to 0 dBV on your ATEM.
