Recording & Streaming

PostWed Apr 24, 2024 2:10 pm

Hey all,

I've started a new job and am looking into recording and streaming options for our auditorium.

Currently, the setup includes a:
- BMD Production Studio 4K
- BMD Video SmartHub 12x12
- BMD ATEM 1 M/E Broadcast Panel
- 4 PTZ 4K Cameras
- 3 Projectors
- 6 Lapel Mics
- & some rack units from Crestron for Presentation and Routing

I'm trying to find a solution for recording and streaming. Currently, we use a product called MediaSite, which we are feeding 1 HDMI for the Program Out, 1 HDMI for the Cameras, and an XLR/RS connection coming from a Focusrite Scarlett for the entire Audio Out.

I was looking for something to record all 3 of those connections and saving the files separately.
I tried plugging into the PS4K via USB to get a video out as I read some older models allowed that, but no luck.

I imagine the ATEM Mini Pro ISO would be a great option, but it doesn't support 4K for the cameras.

Looking at the Hyperdecks and Web Presenters gets a little confusing to me as I'm sort of new to this, it seems I would require 4 Hyperdecks, one for each camera, which just gets too expensive when I currently already have a solution in MediaSite, I just prefer something different. Is there a PCIe capture card out there that would do this? What do you all suggest I look into? Maybe a brief explanation as to why would help me understand.
Thanks!

We run this exact set-up using the DeckLink 8K Pro, as suggest by the above post. Works perfectly day-in, day-out.

4 x Smart HUB SDI outs into 4 x DeckLink 8K Pro SDI Ins fitted into a Dell Aurora R12 desktop, running vMix 4K. vMix ISO records all assigned inputs in sync for an easy import into editor software.

Using the same PC, take the SDI Prog out from your ATEM Production Studio 4K into an SDI to USB3 converter and stream from the PC using vMix. The advantage of streaming via vMix that that you simply enter the destination URL, streamkey and streaming parameters, which is much easier than engaging Blackmagic's cumbersome .xml conversion.

So in essence, vMix handles the 4 x 4K ISOs and the Prog output from your ATEM switcher, meaning all inputs and stream out are recorded in sync to one SSD drive.
2 x Sony FX9, 2 x Sony FX6, 6 x Ursa Broadcasts, 2 x Canon CR-N500 PTZeds with MRMC auto-tracking, ATEM CCU, ATEM TV Studio 4K. NewTek Tricaster TC1 and 460. Dataton Watchout, Reckeen 3D Studio & vMix 4K

VMix Route
VMix 4K: $700 (they also have a subscription option, instead of purchasing outright)
Decklink 8K: $745.00
VMix can record 4k60, but to save money on the more costly PC build for recording 4k60, you can record 4k30
PC to run VMix and record 4 4k30 video inputs: ~$1300 barebones
Total: $2,745

or

HyperDeck Route
4 x Blackmagic Design HyperDeck Studio HD Plus (records 4k30)
$2780
plus SSD's for each of them

Audio
you can mix it at the event, then just record the mix using the same Focusrite box you have, routed to VMix, OR you can record all your lavaliers with their own tracks, and later adjust/mute them as you need. If you have the budget a Zoom F6 has 32 bit float recording, which, putting it simply, means you don't have to be good at setting channel gain on a mixer, you just connect your lavalier receivers to the f6, then hit record. You get 6 channels of multitrack audio that you can adjust in post alongside your video. The F6 also has timecode capabilities; if you go the second route with the HyperDeck Studio HD Plus, they can receive timecode from the F6.

What do you want/need?
How much does having post-production capabilities matter to you? How often do you have diligent/capable people to mix your audio that you'd have no problem recording with no backups? Do you show your cameras on the projectors and, therefore, have staff switching video at every event? If so, do you want to dedicate the time in post-production to duplicate the work of switching? Is 4k30/4k60 an absolute necessity for your use-case?

Part of the benefit of the ATEM mini Extreme ISO is that you get a Davinci Resolve Timeline with all the live-switching included, in addition to ISO recording of all your video inputs. You can adjust the timeline based on the work your live-production switcher already did, which would cut down a lot of the time you spend in post.
