Construction of a new Blackmagic system for Curling

PostWed Aug 21, 2024 11:51 pm

Our curling club has decided to install a video (audio not required) system for our club. The system has two purposes - in club viewing and streaming. The system will be utilizing SDI cameras. As I haven't found too much info online for various clubs (that are recent), here is what we are thinking of doing (we definitely think everything is possible with Blackmagic):

There are four sheets. Each sheet will have a camera above each house (one on each end) and every pair will have a down ice camera on each side. That leaves things at 12 inputs.

For outputs, we will need to do the following. There will be 2 TVs on each sheet that will show the house camera from the other side. There will be a separate TV away from each sheet that will show both houses for the sheet. This is the first set of outputs and covers non-live mode.

In addition, for the stream (ex - YouTube) we would need to do the following: The stream would show the 4 down ice cameras in a row and below that would be the 8 house cameras.

We started to construct the system and so far we see a need for the following Blackmagic components if we are visualizing correctly:
4 x Blackmagic Design SDI to HDMI 3G Micro Converter (to handle the TVs on each sheet)
4 x Blackmagic Design MultiView 4 HD (to split the 2 houses onto one screen)
1 x Blackmagic Design Videohub 40x40 12G Video Router to allow us to send multiple of the same output to the various TVs.

I think we are correct up to this point. The confusion is in what we need next for the streaming piece. We are trying to determine the next piece and I think we need the Multiview 16 to handle the formatting but to get to streaming or assembly I am not quite sure (it has been a long time for me in doing these types of projects). I know there are various hardware and software ways but I think we are missing something. I am also hoping that this solution will then help other clubs.

We are trying not to overcomplicate things in the design so there won't really be active mixing planned. I know parts of the BlackMagic catalog but I imagine I am either missing pieces or not using the correct components for some of the parts. Guidance/suggestions are appreciated.

If U want to stream , U need any video switcher .. BMD have ATEM family .. Constelation have 2ME , where is 20 inputs, 12 outputs , and 2x multiviewer .. or 4ME where is 40 inputs, 24 outputs and 4x multiviewer .. It deppend from your needs .. And U not need videohub ..

i see so the atem constellation does seem to do what the videohub does so i do see the redundancy in that piece

Using your info I was able to re-sketch the design.

Looks like the ATEM 4/ME Constellation HD gives me some of the features I need.

It will take all 12 camera inputs without issue.

Depending on how it is configured I can take 4 TVs and use the 4 MultiView connections to feed them with an SDI to HDMI adapter.

For the other outputs I can route 8 of them to the other 6 TVs and use a combination of SDI to HDMI adapters for 4 of them and 2 MultiView 4 units to cover the rest where the TVs are shared between 2 sheets.

I now have enough connections to send out 12 outputs and have room. The last piece then is to figure out how to take those 12 outputs and use them in conjunction with software to get the YouTube feed i desire.

Does this sound a little bit more logical?

YEs .. Im sending Multiview into input and send it from output to TV .. IT gives me more freedom with routing .. And i can switch from Multiview to PGM or fullscreen any camera on TV, when I need it ..
