ATEM Mini noise on Mic1 & Mic2 Inputs

PostWed Sep 04, 2024 1:49 pm

Using a ATEM Mini to help live broadcast of church service.

Suddenly, within the last 2 weeks, there is hf noise on the broadcast:
To listen, search "Trinity Presbyterian Church of Seven Springs" and play the latest recorded live stream (dated 9/3/24, very short).

Mic1 input is coming from soundboard via cable.

What we did to try and trouble shoot the hf noise issue:

1) Unplug cable from soundboard -> no change
2) Switch to Mic2 input -> no change
3) Change to different cable, connected to Mic1 then to Mic2 -> no change
4) On Mini, turn off Mic1 -> noise gone
5) Turn on Mic1, unplug cable to Mic1 -> noise gone
6) Turn on Mic2, unplug cable to Mic2 -> noise gone

Basically, anytime a cable is plugged into either Mic 1 or Mic2 there is hf noise. Cable can be dead ended, made no difference. Tried it with several cables, even just an adaptor, still noise.

We concluded it was the ATEM Mini that was the issue, so we ordered a new one ($295, not bad).

Did we diagnose the situation correctly? What did we miss?

Hope to get the new unit in a few days, hopefully before Sunday's service!

Thanks.

You didn't mention checking that Mic/Line levels were all in agreement.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

UPDATE:
Received the new unit, and installed it.
HF noise on both Mic1 & Mic2 input is now gone.
This appears to confirm our conclusion that the original ATEM Mini was the source of the HF noise.

Was wondering if it might be possible to return the original unit to Blackmagic for testing, to confirm/deny the failure mode?

Not looking for a refund, and do realize this device is one of the lowest cost items available, but would sure be nice to confirm our failure analysis conclusion(s).

Thanks.
