Ultrastudio HD mini for FIll and key SDI outs **TIPS**

PostWed Sep 04, 2024 2:02 pm

Hi all,
I've been using a custom html5 graphics solution for a while running on an intel NUC (newer version with thunderbolt ports) and feeding an ATEM switcher with fill and key SDI signals. It's been a really robust and effective solution. Just for extra detail, I operate with European kit at 1080i50.

The NUC has the Ultrastudio HD mini connected via thunderbolt and runs OBS.

For those new to this, OBS has the ability to change the A & B outputs of the Ultrastudio to fill and key signals.

The settings in OBS are simple:
A browser source is added with the url of my graphics, and dimensions set to 1920 x 1080.

In settings, video base and output are set to 1920 x 1080. and frame rate 25PAL (for the 50i or i25 as now referred to)

Advanced settings set colour format to RGB on older OBS, or BGRA (8-bit) on the latest version.

Then in Tools > Decklink output, choose the Ultrastudio as the device on the output and mode to your video format (mine being 1080i50). I then check Auto Start on Launch so it's good to go on startup of OBS. Keyer is set to external and then hit START.

However, there is still one IMPORTANT quality setting to address on the Ultrastudio itself.
In the Black Magic Desktop Video setup app, click on the settings icon. Choose your default video format (mine is 1080i50 and I have also set the dip switches on the unit to 1080i50) and then select "display a full frame on video output". This makes interlacing work.

You should now have a beautiful fill and key signal coming from A & B SDI outputs of the Ultrastudio.

**THIS IS AN IMPORTANT WINDOWS DEVELOPMENT**
So the display from OBS running on a MAC is fine. However, the outputs from my NUCs have not been good on new windows11 units, as if it was missing a field, or not being interlaced and this is down to one simple thing: Windows renders fonts like garbage.
Thankfully, after much pointless messing with OBS and BMD desktop video versions, the answer was a Windows advanced settings one all along:
-Press Windows+i to open settings and go to the system tab.
-Scroll down to the About and click on the option of Advanced system settings.
-Go to the performance tab and select settings, go to visual Effects to adjust for best appearance.

And that will fix the output when OBS is on windows systems so fonts look lovely instead of like an 90's video game.

Troubleshooting:
Often if you don't see your graphics show up on your ATEM's DSK (where you would have set it up) it's because of one of 3 reasons. Probably.
1 - is START selected in the OBS tools > Decklink Output?
2 - is the ATEM operating in the same format as the settings you have in OBS?
3 - did you set OBS advance settings colour format to RGB or BGRA (8-bit) - this is actually important if you've updated OBS, as some versions DO NOT SEEM TO HAVE A WORKING FORMAT option.

I hope this helps and I'm guessing (as i don't have one), that Decklink might be used instead of the Ultrastudio seeing as that's what OBS calls the settings area for it.
