Blackmagic Studio 6K Pros Internal Recording Question

PostTue Oct 01, 2024 3:00 pm

My office is starting to incorporate the Studio 6K Pros in our live workflow. We were are largely a Canon house, so the EF mount version just makes sense for us. Cameras have been performing great for our purposes! The problem comes in with the records from cameras themselves.

We typically record ISOs within cameras as we are fairly mobile with our productions. The 6K records is a bit overkill for ISO backups even when set to the lowest BRAW codec. When reducing the recording resolution below 6K it crops into the sensor, even on the SDI output to our Atems. This results in Terabytes of footage from longer event recordings, which we do fairly regularly. Would love to record at 4K or 1080p without cropping in.

My workarounds for now, have been using Atem Mini ISOs to record everything. Our main switcher though is the 2 M/E Constellation HD (with a Hyperdeck Studio 2 for PGM recording), so no ISO records built in there.

Is there a better solution anyone here can think of other than a small Hyperdeck rack or Atem Mini ISO as a recorder? Or do I need to hope for a firmware update that gets rid of this issue? (not sure that's even possible with how the cams are built)

Thanks!
