Atem Mini : Multi Picture question

PostTue Nov 12, 2024 12:42 pm

Hello All,

I am considering buying an Atem Mini (Pro?) to create YT videos. I am planning to use three HD cameras and cut everything later in Davinci Resolve. My idea is to record a 4K image and split it into 4 tiles, so each HD camera is using one tile. Later in Resolve, I can choose which camera I using the respective tile.
Not sure yet if this is the most elegant solution but wanted to ask if this is possible in principle.

Best regards, Michael

The Atem Mini line is limited to HD resolutions.

You would probably be better off just syncing your cameras and recording there and then using the multicam features of Davinci without the need to add a switcher and tiling.

Hm... yea, just looked a bit deeper into the specs. I don't want to sync on my own.
However, just found that the Mini Por ISO can record all incoming streams to an SSD. Looks like this is what I need.

Hi,
I am not 100% sure what you are trying to achieve, but I think if you setup a multicam timeline in DVR you will get the 4 tiles you are talking about, and you don't need an ATEM for that. We have an ATEM Mini Extreme ISO, which we use on nearly all of our shoots, both in studio and on-site. It sounds to me like you are only editing in Resolve. If you haven't bought an ATEM, I'd suggest looking into the Multicam first as that will give you the 4 tiles you mention, and may be all you need.

The only benefit to using an Atem Pro ISO is that your recordings will be synced at the point of recording. However the quality of the recordings will be almost certainly be lower than those made in camera if you are using decent cameras. (The Atem Mini models record 1080p 4:2:0 h.264 LongGOP)

If you are happy to clap-sync (or similar) in-camera recordings you'll potentially get far better quality results (if your cameras record at better quality than 1080p 4:2:0 h.264 - which most will these days) - and can use the same Resolve Multicam editing interface as you would otherwise

Thanks a lot for your input gentlemen. I don't care that much about the multicam set-up in Resolve but more about the overall workflow. I want to record three cameras plus three desktop screens on my own and avoid as much intermediate steps as possible. I also want to have the camera output at a glance on one screen. For this I am willing to sacrifice picture quality.
Of course I could record in-camera but then I need to press record/stop for every take. Upload memory cards and so on. I am also working in a tight space. Having everything at my fingertips and being able to start/stop with one button press allows me to concetrate more on my content.
