Audio Management on ATEM Constellation HD 2M/E

PostSat Dec 14, 2024 4:10 pm

Hello everyone,

I’m new to the forum and I’ve been impressed by the excellent work this community does in developing solutions and helping users resolve their technical challenges. I hope you can help me with a question about optimizing audio management in my setup.

I’m working on an OB-VAN setup that includes a Blackmagic ATEM 2 M/E Constellation HD, and I need advice on how to address two key requirements:

- Physically adjust the audio levels of cameras connected to the mixer, including separate control of two microphones from the same camera (placed on the left and right channels, respectively).
- Manage a Dante commentary unit (triple position) integrated with the rest of the audio-video workflow.

Current Setup:
At the moment, we are using an analog audio mixer where all de-embedded audio signals from the cameras are routed. The commentary system is also analog. However, we now want to transition the entire audio workflow to digital, leveraging Dante for flexibility and scalability.

The Issue:
In our OB-VAN, I need a solution that allows me to:
- Individually control the audio levels of all cameras using a physical audio mixer, without relying solely on the control software.
- Split and independently control left and right channels for a camera with two microphones.
- Integrate additional audio inputs, both Dante (e.g., commentary unit) and analog, into the mixer for routing and mixing flexibility.
- Ensure proper N-1 feed distribution for commentary positions.

Possible Solutions I’m Considering:

- Converting to Dante:
-Route the embedded audio of all cameras to a single SDI output.
-De-embed the audio from the SDI signal and convert it to Dante.
-Use a Dante-compatible mixer to individually control each audio channel (including left and right channel separation for the camera with two microphones).

- Using a Behringer Wing Compact:
-Connect the Wing via USB to the PC to control the camera audio using motorized faders.
-Connect the Wing via RJ45 to the Dante network, which includes the commentary unit and other Dante devices.
- Configure the mixer to:
- Adjust the embedded camera audio, including the two separate channels (L/R) for the camera with two microphones.
- Mix the audio from Dante channels with the de-embedded audio from the cameras.
- Send N-1 feeds to the commentary positions via auxiliary outputs.

Question:
Based on your experience, what would be the most efficient solution for this OB-VAN setup as we transition to a fully digital audio workflow? Are there any simpler alternatives or proven workflows that could help me integrate these devices?

Thank you very much in advance for your time and suggestions. I’m looking forward to hearing your thoughts!

Best regards

Digiface Dante + a Dante compatible mixer will solve all of your problems.

Digiface Dante doesn’t do SDI<>Dante. You would need the Sonifex AVN-DIO10 for that. A bit more R&D on your part will yield a path. All these things are possible. Not cheap, but possible.

Sorry it would need to be an ATEM 4 m/e, not the 2 m/e. The digiface Dante would be to take the madi to Dante from the 4 m/e.

The Sonifex Dante-converter seems nice - use the new audio routing in the 2M/E to route 16 relevant audio signals from inputs to a single aux output, de-embed them directly to Dante there.

Includes SRC etc

His 2M/E does not have MADI out, so that won't help without upgrading the switcher first unless I'm overlooking something. The Sonifex deembeds from SDI, so no other hardware upgrades are necessary.

I agree SDI sonifex would be good. I saw a used one on eBay go recently for $800.
