Hyperdeck Extreme 8K performance in multi camera mode

PostFri Jan 24, 2025 11:01 pm

Once again, I'm convinced that Blackmagic Design has some really experienced and skilled marketers, and it's crucial to analyze their products very carefully for specific tasks.

In their latest update, they announced that the HyperDeck Extreme 8K can now record video from 4 sources in 4K. The specs also mention support for Apple ProRes 422 and higher, as well as 10G Multidock support. But nowhere does it say that all of this can actually work together!

I'm thinking of building a multi-camera recording setup where I need to capture 4 cameras in UHD 60fps, ProRes 422. It would be really convenient to organize everything using the Extreme 8K in a chain, recording to SSDs in the Multidock 10G. But basic calculations show that no 2.5" SSD can handle such a data stream. Fortunately, there's an option to install an additional SSD for caching, which theoretically should compensate for drops on the M.2 SSD.

Has anyone tried setting up something like this? How does it actually perform? And how will it hold up in long recording sessions, say around 8 hours? Honestly, I'm a bit hesitant to invest in equipment that has an obvious weak spot from the start.

I think its not good idea to use Hyperdeck 8K to record 4 x UHD signal .. Hyperdeck 8K cost $5000 .. Hyperdeck 4K cost $1500 , so 4x cost $6000 .. Its only $1000 more for complicated setup .. And main problem for me , is redundancy and safety .. When Hyperdeck 8K freeze , or SSD or medium got any problem, u lost all 4 camera records .. When U have 4 Hyperdecks 4K and one freeze , u still have 3 aditional records ..

I agree with you, simplifying it down to four sources really makes sense. In that case, a multidock wouldn’t even be necessary. A drive bay with a few M.2 SSDs would be more than enough to handle the data flow. I mentioned four as an example of the minimum setup, but in reality, my setup is much bigger and more complex.

Yes I understand .. We have 6 hyperdecks in OBVAN .. Sometime recording 6 cameras .. Sometime is 6 not enough and adding atomos recorders .. When we doing sport events without recording all cameras , everytime we recording primary + backup .. Everything into 2 recorders .. for safe ..

Not easy to find a reliable solution for recording 4 or more 4K SDI sources.
