Audio control panel for Constellation.

PostTue Feb 04, 2025 8:56 pm

I`m looking for an audio control panel to operate the audio channels of the Constellation 8K. I have looked at the ICON P1-M and it looks promising. It uses the Mackie control protocol, so in theory it should work. Has anyone tested this and have any experiences to share?

Thank you, Roman.
It would be great if you could do a test. Nice to have verified if it works. Wondering if things like EQ, compressor, etc. can also be controlled from ICON.

I would start looking at a solution where you take the audio mixing completely out of the ATEM. The ATEM Constellation 8K has MADI In and Out and I would use these to connect to an external audio mixer and mix the audio there. This gives you much more flexibility as the internal audio mixer in the ATEM is very limited. Although MADI is not a very popular choice nowadays many manufacturers like A&H and Midas/Behringer (via Klark Technik) have MADI cards for their mixers.

I agree with you that an external mixer and MADI is a good solution. But there are occasions where it is nice to use the internal mixer. Like when you have many different sources, such as sdi embedded audio, audio from a media player or hyperdeck. Perhaps you want to route audio to a Hyperdeck for multi channel recording. For such cases, I prefer a controller with physical faders and knobs.

i agree with eMilty .. internal mixing its not bad .. But main disadvantage is , that u can mix what do you want , bud allways is output only one stereo BUS .. you have 64 channels of internal inputs and 64 channels from dante .. And main output is still only one BUS ..

MADI on 40 input constelation models is great for embeding and deembeding signals .. you do not need any embeders/deembeders any more .. u can send 2 or 4 channels from all connected inputs into MADI and then into any audio console .. And for back , U can send 64 channels of mixer audio buses into ATEM and send any combination into aux outputs .. 16 different channels to every output .. THats really nice ..

I don't disagree with you. The new audio routing gives new possibilities. Perhaps it`s not common to use audio control panels for Atem software. Still, I'd like to know if the Icon P1-M will work...

The new audio routing feature is definitely a great help for some situations but the lack of busses is still a big problem. Mix minus is still very cumbersome (or sometimes impossible) to set up for example, very easy on an external digital mixer.
