HyperDeck Recordings on MacOS/Apple Silicon

PostWed Feb 12, 2025 10:55 pm

Our offices recently updated to MacOS 15.3.1 and NONE of the files recorded on by our HyperDeck Studio 4k Pro are viewable via QuickTime Player or Final Cut Pro software. It's worth noting that these files can play the audio from the files but not the video. Other video files recorded with the same H.264 codec seem to open without issue, it is just the files from the HyperDeck that won't read correctly. Other programs such as VLC, Adobe Premiere Pro, or DaVinci Resolve seem to be unaffected. One other note is this appears to be a problem on machines equipped with Apple's M1 and M2 processors. Running the same OS on a intel based Mac hasn't shown any issue.

My guess is that this is likely an Apple issue, but I wanted to post here in case anyone else has run into this problem and knows any workarounds. Unfortunately for us, Our editors primarily use Final Cut Pro on M1 Pro equipped Macs, for editing and this has them dead in the water.

We don’t really use FCP much but I did notice there was a recent update from Apple for Professional CODECS on our Apple Silicon machines with FCP installed.

Thank you for the suggestion. Prior to posting here, I did make sure that all of our systems were running the latest updates. My theory is that it may be something to do with the data rate. Other videos rendered with the H.264 codec don't have any issue, just appears to be the raws from the HyperDeck itself. We have put in a few calls to Apple, and I'll post here if they give me any solutions that, solve this problem.

Has anyone found a solution for this?
I'm in the same boat. Now that I've upgraded to the newest Mac (M3), the files from the Hyperdeck are not working. The computer sees the file and actually plays it and there's audio, but the video is black. (same deal if I load directly into FCP)
Deck is set to H264, obviously shouldn't be a problem but this is a bit of a nightmare.
FWIW - when I run it through a program called EditReady, it fixes it...

I think I have finally solved this issue. Looks like updating your MAC OS to 15.4.1 fixes these issues. If for some reason this doesn't work, or you can't upgrade, if you have a time machine back up prior to 15.3 reverting to any version previous to 15.3 should also work.
