ATEM Mini Extreme HDMI Output 2 Not Working After An Update!

PostFri Feb 14, 2025 2:38 pm

I just want to share my frustrating experience with my ATEM Mini Extreme.

I bought my Mini Extreme around 2022 for a project, but that project only lasted about two months. In total, I used the unit fewer than eight times. After that, I stored it safely inside its box and put it on the shelf.

Fast forward to recently, I decided to use it for our church’s multi cam setup. I took it out, tested it, and everything was running smoothly with my old ATEM Software Control (lower version). Then, a firmware update prompt appeared, saying an update was available. I updated it, and that’s when I noticed my second HDMI output had stopped working. My monitor, which was plugged into HDMI output 2, suddenly displayed "No Signal."

I tried everything—reinserting the cable, replacing the cable, rolling back the software, performing a factory reset—but nothing worked. So, I reached out to Blackmagic Design (BMD) for a possible solution or repair. I understand that my unit is past its warranty period, but the real issue here is that the firmware update seemed to have triggered the failure.

BMD’s response? Just buy a new one because repairs are "not practical." But why would I buy a new one when everything was working fine until the update? And what makes them think I’m going to buy another ATEM Mini switcher again after this experience? Do they really think it’s that easy to just buy a new unit? It’s not even cheap.

It’s frustrating because I would have accepted the failure if it had been due to natural wear and tear. But in this case, the update itself caused the issue. That’s what makes this so disappointing. The lack of repair options and support from BMD is unacceptable, especially when their own firmware update triggered the problem.

So, for me, the ATEM Mini is basically disposable. If an update can break a barely used unit and the only solution is to buy a new one, then what’s the point? Be careful when updating your firmware—you never know if it will render your device useless with no real support from BMD.

I have the same issue. Actually output 1 i have never been able to get to work, output 2 played up like this then magically started working when I toggled different resolutions. Today it has finally died. Likely the TDP158 chip is fried due to overheating. BlackMagic failed here in their design. They should have put more active cooling in the unit. The thing gets really hot and not in a nice way, the top of the unit ermits consierable head which to me is a sign the cooling is inadequate. I have put the unit on a laptop coolpad with fans which helps.
For the broken HDMI output I have found a workaround which is to use the USB output to a mini PC (any computer with hdmi output and a camera app wil do) and then using the camera app on the PC in full screen mode.
On the Atem go to outputs - webcam and set the desired output like Mutliview.
On a PC use the camera pp and select the Atem usb, on Linux you can use an app like cheese.

(I also set output 1 and 2 to black to minimize any stress on the fried hdmi circuitry)

I am experiencing a similar situation...
Did you try downgrading the firmware? Is that even possible?
