Blackmagic ATEM TVS HD8 – Talkback Routing Issue

PostMon Mar 10, 2025 11:17 am

Hi everyone,

I’m having trouble configuring the audio routing on the Blackmagic ATEM Television Studio HD8, specifically regarding the different talkback settings:
1. Production Talkback
2. Engineering Talkback
3. Control Out
4. Studio Out

My main issue is that there doesn’t seem to be a clear way to output a clean audio feed (without talkback) for monitoring or sending to a venue’s PA system. The closest workaround I found is:
• Disabling Engineering Talkback entirely
• Routing channels 13/14 to NOT receive Engineering Talkback
• Not sending anything to Studio Out
• If the camera operators don’t talk through their cameras, then Control Out will output clean audio

This workaround is neither intuitive nor practical. In my opinion, the audio routing should allow explicit control over which outputs receive Production Talkback or Engineering Talkback—and if so, where those talkback signals are sent.

Does anyone have a better solution for this? Or is this something Blackmagic could improve in a future firmware update?

Thanks!

If you want clean audio out, deembed it from an SDI out with a fairly cheap SDI to HDMI mini-converter. That will only take channels 1&2 and ensure that you won't have to remember to enable the outputs, remember not to talk etc.

The audio outputs on that mixer are pretty much designed for talkback / intercom, not for program audio.

The new audio routing for the Constellations does allow more complex routing, so that may be a thing to check as well if it's supported on the TVS HD8 - it involves loading setups from an XML file and then not touching the output routing, so is quite fragile for now.

Shai : im not sure , what exactly do you need .. SDI have 16 audio channels .. U can route there lot of channels of audio .. U can program exactly what you need on your ATEM on every AUX output/audio channel ..

What the OP is referring to is the TRS Monitor outputs that have optionally mixed Talkback and Program feeds. These outputs do not have any routing capability unfortunately. The best method given above is to use a SDI to Audio Converter to extract Program audio for the speakers if you are still wanting to use Talkback within the system. I hope this helps.
