MP4 Playback from Hyperdeck Studio Mini

PostWed May 21, 2025 7:21 pm

Hello, all,
We have a pair of Hyperdeck Studio Mini units, one for use in recoding, and the other I would like to use for playback. However.....
...When I load an MP4 file (either natively recorded in a digital video camera or edited using Davinci Resolve), I am unable to get any of those video files to play back in the Hyperdeck. The Hyperdecks will record video, and will play back that which they have recorded, but I would like to take a file from DaVinci Resolve and play it on the Hyperdeck. When working with DaVinci Resolve, I attempted to take an edited output file and place it on an SD memory card for the Hyperdeck, but the Hyperdeck did not recognize the file. I noticed recently that there is a Render Setting that shows as H.264 Hyperdeck, but after attempting to use that output/render setting, I still could not play the file in the Hyperdeck.
Is there something I'm missing? Some step I've overlooked or didn't know about? I hope someone can give me some guidance to help resolve this issue.
Thank you all very much.

Hi Dale

Quick Answer

The HyperDecks only PLAY files with the same CODEC set up for recording.

Let's say: if the HyperDeck is set up in ProRes, it will only play ProRes files, even if you have .DNxHD or .H.264 files on the SDcard or SSD.
 Just try set up the hyperdeck with different codecs to play your clips

NOTE:Test it exporting from Resolve using the preset: H.264 HyperDeck.
Don't use folders, just leave the files at the root

I hope help

Hyperdeck h264 export works fine for us, are you using approved media?

The media we have been using to date is SanDisk Ultra. I don't see it on the "approved media list". It has recorded fine for us...would this really affect playback capability?

I imagine cards fail to meet the approved media list for a variety of reasons.

Maybe try formatting the cards in the Hyperdeck?

Could be the Resolve settings, there are ways to bag the preset.

Adding to what others have already said above, it's not only that they only play files with the same codec as you've selected for recording, the files must also all have the same resolution and framerate as the first file it finds. Furthermore, do not use any non-ASCII characters in your filenames as these have been proven to be problematic in the past and I don't think BMD has fixed this issue.
