List of computers that works with BMD USB3.0 products

PostPosted: Fri Jan 18, 2013 10:59 pm
by Xtreemtec
Okee the whole idea behind this topic is to take out the fuzz about which laptop / pc will or won't work with USB 3.0 products.

>> An updated official list from BMD (03-01-2018)<<

If you have a laptop / PC with USB3 that works? Please post a message in this topic with the data i need.
Also if you have 1 of these laptops and you can confirm that a application or device works stable. Please tell so. Then i will update this post with the new information.

Devices:
- Atem
- Ultrascope
- Intensity
- Ultrastudio

Operating systems:
- Windows 7 64x bit
-(while Windows 8 is not official supported YET!!) There is something in Win8 called XHCI host controller. I have read several reports of users getting it to work after going trough the steps on this site> http://plugable.com/2012/12/01/windows- ... ntrollers/

* MAC OS: Currently there are no drivers for MAC based software.
At this moment there is someone running windows by Bootcamp and says he has it working. When i have more info about this i will post it!

Blackmagic USB3.0 Update document for Renesas:
http://www.blackmagicdesign.com/media/1 ... nstall.pdf

Intel driver 2.1.28.1 can be downloaded here:
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_ ... ldID=19880

Renesas / NEC driver can be downloaded here (but i found that the latest driver is a downgrade):
http://www.station-drivers.com/page/renesas.htm

I recomend the Renesas / NEC drivers from Plugable: (watch that you download the right version)
http://plugable.com/drivers/renesas

NOTE: Recording of uncompressed video on a laptop can be a big issue. SSD's are recommended as they have higher write speeds. Also a lot of newer laptops do have eSata connections were you can connect a harddrive externally. Always check your drive with DiskSpeed

Express Cards: As at this moment while there are Express Card 2.0 cards with USB 3 superspeed. They don't seem to work with the BMD products because of bandwidth problems. If you have more information or suggestions please tell so. We will update this info. Here is a topic were a lot of this is dicussed> http://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewt ... 546#p26546

Sony Vaio: There been several reports of Sony Vaio laptops not working because of bandwitdh problems. It seems that Sony did not route the USB 3 chipset for full speed.

Down here i will be posting laptops that work and are tested by users of this forum:

Very usefull information from Sarah Jones from Blackmagic Design. This post was made for a intensity shuttle that stayed black.
But could also be usefull for the other capture devices.

Sarah Jones wrote:Having the NEC/Renesas chipset on your computer is not an absolute guarantee that the hardware will fully work on your system, and we have seen limited success on laptop computers. The first thing I would check is if the Intensity Shuttle is detected on your system properly. To check this, you'll go to your Control Panel and under the Blackmagic Design Control Panel, you'll want to make sure the settings are not greyed out and the top of the window says "Settings for your Intensity Shuttle." If your settings are all greyed out and the window says "No Settings Required" this means that the hardware is not detecting on the system.

If you are getting detection, when you're in Media Express, you'll want to make sure that in the "Device" drop down menu at the top, the Intensity Shuttle is selected at your device. If no hardware is detected, make sure no other software is open that might have already connected to the device. Typically this will include things like editing or streaming software.

If you do have the hardware detected in Media Express, you'll want to go back to your Control Panel settings and make sure you have selected the proper input. For the setup you describe, this would be Composite Video and Analog RCA Audio. Also be sure Input Processing and Output Processing are both set to "Off." Back in Media Express, you'll want to go to your Preferences and select the proper Project Video Format to match your source's resolution. Again, in your setup, this will be PAL. For your second setup, you'll need to adjust the input to HDMI and the resolution to 1080p25.

Xtreemtec contacted me to weigh in, sorry I don't have time to post too much detail, will try to follow up later.

I use 2 types of laptops that function well with our ATEM 1 M/E and TV Studio switchers:

msi GT683 DXR - google it for specs
Ultrascope softw: Yes
Media express: Yes
Hardware:
ATEM1 > Yes (streaming, no recording)
TV Studio > Yes (can record & stream)

Samsung RC512 - google for specs
Ultrascope softw: Yes
Media express: Yes
Hardware:
ATEM1 > Yes (streaming, no recording)
TV Studio > Yes (streaming, no recording - HDD too slow)

Both of these laptops are pushing 2 yrs old so you might find newer technology. I remember at the time the USB3.0 chipset compatibility was the most important aspect of finding a compatible computer.

Regarding the Asus G55, the driver I'm currently using (and works) is 1.0.3.214.

I know there is a newer version (1.0.7.248), but I haven't tried it yet.

Okee good to know. The others i have taken the driver version that was available in the download section of ASUS. But that doesn't say it that these will work. So if you can confirm the drivers of the other 2 laptops in the next week or so. That would be nice. ;)

For the G53 and G74, the driver version is 3.5.24.0. Got them from here:

EDIT:

And you can get the G55 driver from here:

I can verify that the Shuttle works without an issue on the Asus G75VW-BBK5 (and I imagine other G75VW models). I had absolutely no issues using it with the latest USB 3.0 chipset drivers from the Intel website (Not the Asus site! Those are old!).

I was able to record using the Blackmagic Design application (Desktop video I think it's called?) and I was able to stream using XSplit and Decklink.

I will update this post with exact driver versions when I get home later today.

So I tried the newest Intel USB 3.0 drivers (1.0.7.248), and I can confirm that they work just fine with the Asus G55.

Drivers can be downloaded from here:

I have bought ASUS N76VM laptop for use with my Blackmagic instensity shuttle USB 3.0 and works. I'm using this kit with Telestream Wirecast software for streaming.

I'm waiting the second Blackmagic instensity shuttle USB 3.0 to connect another camcorder.

Sorry by my bad english.

Using a Sony Vaio VPCF236HG with Windows 8 Pro 64 Bit works smoothly with Atem 1M/E. Vector scope and Media Express streaming working and stable. Renesas USB 3.0 Driver version is 2.1.39.0. Will test some more USB 3.0 products soon and let you know results. I have upgraded my HDD drive on the Laptop to a Corsair SSD

I have the Asus G53 listed here as "working" for the Intensity only with a newer Fresco driver 3.5.93.0. I did an automatic update before I saw the driver listed here. Could this be the reason I am not able to get the Intensity USB 3 to work? I just bought the Intensity and would like to get this to work. Thanks.

That could possibly be. Uninstall the Fresco controller driver, reboot, and then install driver version 3.5.24.0, and reboot again.

Also, before doing any of this, unsintall the Blackmagic Desktop Video software/driver.

Fresco driver can be found here:

http://www.station-drivers.com/page/fresco_logic.htm

EDIT:
I know this sounds basic, but also make sure you are plugging the Shuttle into the USB 3.0 port, as the G53 only has one (it's the blue one).

I unistalled and when I went to reinstall windows said I had the most up to date driver. So I went back to what I had and then tried again. I get composite capture but no other input will work, s-video, component, HDMI. Is it possible I have a bad unit?

Forgot to add, yes - i'm using the only USB 3 port on my computer.

Able to reinstall drivers and all seems good - except ability to capture HD footage to my laptop. Having an SSD installed. Question - should I have the SSD installed as a video drive and keep the main drive I am currently using for programs or vice-versa?

Did you change the input and settings in the Blackmagic Control Panel? I believe when I got my Shuttle, it defaulted to composite. You have to change it to component or HDMI for HD (and you then have to select the resolution and framerate). You then have to select the same resolution and framerate within Media Express (or whatever software you're trying to capture with).

Regarding the SSD, I'd use it as a separate media drive only. I never capture to my main OS drive.

btw, the Blackmagic Control Panel is in the Windows Control Panel/Hardware and Sound. Should be the last thing listed.

Could someone please explain why a computer with a USB3 port would *not* work with your products? I mean, what is it about the port that would cause it to fail? The bandwidth? Voltage? What?

Doesn't the USB3 specification require specific bandwidth, voltage, etc? Why don't all USB3-compliant ports work?

Thanks,
Gili

You can search the forum for more detailed and authoritative answers but the hard fact reported is that not all USB3 chipsets are built the same and the requirements for uncompressed video just seem to highlight the problem.

Indeed USB 3 has no hard specs what it should comply with.

It seems that only a few chipsets (renesas / Nec / and some ivy bridge) enabled laptops work good with uncompressed video.

Bandwidth is the mayor issue... A lot of laptop manufacturers build in USB3 as a sale point. But is not always embedded in such way that it is possible to do 5Gbit/s. To include USB3 seems to be more important than make it possible to run it to the maximum speed.

With thunderbolt there is a organization that tests the product / laptop / computer etc before it may be sold as such Thunderbolt complaint device.

That means that if it is not implemented to accept the full 10Gbit/s it will be rejected and the manufacturer has to change the design or remove it from the product.

Is it possible to test the speed of a USB3 port without an actual uncompressed video as input? http://superuser.com/questions/566615/h ... 052_566615

How do you guys test whether a particular USB3 implementation is stable or not?

- Capturing with Media Express (MJPEG)
- Capturing with AmaRecTV (lossless, UT Video)

I captured from a XBOX360 in 720p60/30 while playing Halo 4.

Sometimes the Shuttle won't be recognized anymore after I close a program that had used it, I'm still figuring out if this is a issue with the blackmagic software. A reboot is required to get it working again, I don't have any of theses issues on my Desktop PC with the same software versions.

I'm testing my new HP Envy DV4 with intensity shuttle usb 3.0, for playback Works excellent with media express but with wirecast, fmle and procaster the shuttle keeps disconnecting and sometimes crashes my laptop. Wirecast Works better if I open media express first, after that everything with wirecast goes ok. I'll update later today with more information.

Hi All,

I've got Intensity Shuttle USB 3.0 working on my Dell Latitude 6520 Laptop.

Below are the details.

Brand: DELL Latitude 6520
Motherboard chipset : Mobile Intel 6 Series/C200 Series - QM67 Express Chipset.
Type: No Idea
Graphics card: NVIDIA® NVS 42
Chipset: NEC USB 3.0 ( This is a Transcent USB 3.0 Express Card 34)
Driver: V2.1.39.0
Firmware: 4.0.2.0
Driver & Firmware from: http://www.station-drivers.com/page/renesas.htm

Media express: Works
Hardware:
Intensity - Works
Software : Livestream for Producers, Ustream, Wirecast works well.
Xsplit & Adobe Live Encoder is not working due to its WDM capture option, gives BSOD in Windows 7 Professional, maybe updated driver from Blackmagic would help in future.

It is very strange that Blackmagic is not able to release updates to its firmware/Driver that can be supported to the latest generation of Desktops/Laptops.
It took me quite a while to do research to get this setup working.

Try using the Transcend Express Card 34/54 which comes with NEC/Renesas chipset.

P.S: This specification worked in my case, i would not suggest to follow this unless you have all the above said equipment handy.

If you have a laptop with USB3 that works? Please post a message in this topic with the data i need.
Also if you have 1 of these laptops and you can confirm that a application or device works stable. Please tell so. Then i will update this post with the new information.

Devices:
- Intensity

Operating systems:
- Windows 7 64x bit

Down here i will be posting laptops that work and are tested by users of this forum:

Brand: ASUS
Type: G74
Pricepoint: ~1700
Grafick card: NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 560M
Chipset: Fresco
Driver: V3.5.24.0
Firmware: --
Driver from: http://www.station-drivers.com/page/fresco_logic.htm
Media express: Works
Hardware:
Intensity > Works

Hey guys, I have a ASUS G74SX, and after some trial and error, I have managed to get the BMIS running on my laptop, but it's flakey. Media Express doesn't always show the video. Device manager shows it up properly, and so does the BM control panel (non greyed out) This was on 9.1 and I can't remember which driver I was using.

Anyway, it has stopped working altogether and I am clueless to what has happened. It still detects fine in device manager, but my control panel has greyed out, and ME shows "no device is connected". When plugging in the cable, it also pops up with "This Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle can transfer information faster if you connect it to a Super-Speed USB3.0 port". I don't recall seeing this message before. The laptop only has one USB3 port, and I have tested it by plugging in a USB3 drive, and it works fine. I proceeded to double check by plugging the usb3 drive into a USB2 port, and the expected message appeared. I went on to test the cable I was using by using it on another external USB3 hub, and USB3 drive works, but BMIS gives the super-speed message.

I did a system restore to an earlier date when the device was working, but to no avail. I have tried 9.0, 9.1, 9.5 and 9.7.3. Maybe it would be good if you guys could list which version of ME worked/failed as well.

Downgraded my fresco drivers to the one mentioned in the first post (3.5.24.0), no go. tried 3.5.4.0 and 3.5.97.0 (latest) from station drivers. also no go. Followed the suggested steps: uninstall drivers, reboot, upgrade drivers, reboot, install Desktop video s/w, reboot, plug in device.

Also, it goes into this crazy update loop. argh.

Windows is updated as well.

I am really at my wits' end. This has been so frustrating since the first day I bought it. I can't believe how bad the compatibility is for this. From past experiences, some of the non-supported pcie usb3.0 or built in usb3.0 devices "will work" with an external powered usb3.0 hub, something that could have been included in the BMIS.

Hopefully someone in the same situation could share how they managed to fix it.

I'd try a fresh install of Windows 7, and go from there. Yes, a major PITA, but I'm pretty sure that'll fix your problem.

I have an I7 sony vaio running windows 8. The above mentioned hack did in fact solve the usb 3.0 problem with my unit. However, my hard drive is not quite up to the task at hand. Capturing in mpeg on the laptop seemed to work, but uncompressed immediately dropped frames. Im not surprised as the disk check utility did indicate my drive speeds were too slow.

I willl be getting a tvs or a h264 recorder to take some of the the workload off of the laptops. Next year I will get a desktop unit that will be able to handle the uncompressed hd.

Well the only way a laptop could handle uncompressed would be to use either an SSD or to connect an external RAID.

I have had a lot of success using Clevo Laptops and the USB 3 Intensity Shuttle. Clevo make laptops that are then re-branded around the world (such as Sager in the USA) I was using the shuttle happly under Win 7 and Win 8 (with the forced in Intel driver) on 5 of their Ivy bridge models and am having success so far with Win 7 on the new Haswell models that came out last week (haven't had time to test it with Win 8 yet)
Update: It seems the new Intel Haswell chipset USB 3 drivers don't work well with BM USB 3 devices either on Laptops or Desktops. I hope BM will fix this as it's going to be a standard going forward on all new PC's
