DECIMATOR DMON-16S vs MultiView 16

PostMon Mar 06, 2017 7:58 pm

I want to add a multiview to my rig and can not decide on which of these 2 to get. The BMD version supports UHD but I have read in the forum that there are latency problems. I have not found many reviews of the DMON-16S. It does looks like the Decimator version allows better control of widow layout.

Suggestions?

The decimator multiviewers are really nice. Much more flexible than the BMD ones. If you don't need formats above 3G SDI then I'd definitely get the decimator.

If tally is important to you I would go with decimator...

Looking at the Decimator I do not think it has a loop out. This would be a deal killer for me, I need loop out to feed into a Videohub,

That is nowhere near big enough to match the rest of the kit you've been talking about. You should cancel it and get at least the 40x40. Too small router is the classic mistake of many system designs.

Just canceled it after reading your last comment. Let's see if B&H can pull it before sending the rest of the items in my order.

It really makes a huge difference if you can route all your devices from the router anything where you end up with hard patched destinations is immediately less flexible and thus annoying. 40x40 is the right size for a 1ME system (or a 2me if you are using less than 8 cameras) if you have more than 8 cameras then seriously consider going to 72x72 router.

The router is the heart of the system, don't skimp on your heart <3 :)

Going with the 40 x 40 12G-SDI. Will give the system a heart transplant in the future if I outgrow it.

I have a Decimator DMon4 And i really like the flexibility.. This one does not have the features of the big ones with tally and UMD and stuff.. But being free in layout options and all the overlay functions you can turn on or off..

Great piece of gear without huge delays..

I have 2 of the BMD MultiView 16 units and they are pretty solid now. I wish they would update them with the flexible windows that the Decimator multiview has. Last firmware update was Sept 2016. It's due for an update!

I have both a DMON-12 and BMD Multiview 16. The DMON blows the Multiview away in almost every possibly way. Lots of configuration, no latency, simple interface. That being said, the only places I like the Multiview better is the built in loop-out and if you need higher than 3G. I went with the multiview in my one application because I needed loop through.

Tom talked me into getting the VideoHub 40x40 12G so I would not need those loop-outs. I do wonder if Decimator will release a higher rate multi view at NAB this year though.

I'd not get too excited about 4k this or that, we are so far away from 4k being a reality for full production chain.

Blackmagic like to think they are pushing the boundaries with this 4k stuff but the reality is that 3g 1080p is still above average delivery standards and the vast majority of people have no capability to view even 3g 1080p at this point.

Few people have TVs which are 4k capable, those who do do not have the ability to watch 4k content live as the delivery networks don't provide it. Nobody even knows which codec will become the standard for 4k delivery at this point.

There is more to life then pixel count, investment in 3g live chain will see you good for at least 5 years, by which point 4k might just be happening, and Blackmagic will be pushing 8k!

I agree with Tom,

4K is just starting.. And if you don't need 4K at this moment or within a year because a client demands it.. Don't invest in 4K.!! The upcoming 3 or 4 years the 4K market will change fast..
While i must say i really hope that Decimator comes with a 12G MD-HX or Cross version.. ;) 8-)

 (Which i do say with a 12G 4K OBV running arround )

Why i choose to build the OBV 12G 4K all the way is because i have clients that demand that my live multicam delivers the same resolution / quality as the aftermovie shooters running arround with there RED and Sony FS7 cameras.

My clients are festivals that demand high quality multicam.. 4K mixdown on the SSD instead of EDL recording and bring all the content in to post...

I have a difficult time to find the best 4K camera for live production while keeping it's cost down so we don't overkill on the price.
I really hope i will find my holy grail in 4K camera that is suitable for real 4K live on festivals and events..

Ursa has 12G sdi but it's low light performance and 3 frames delay is a deal breaker
Red does not output 4K without an accesoires of 6000,- dollars
Sony FS7 Does output 4K on HDMI, but on sdi goes only up to 3G-sdi..
Sony F5 & F55 Way to expensive for rental While giving you 4K on Quad 3G-sdi
Aja Cion.. Never really made it into the market.. While it had Quad 3G 4K output. (But has the same low light issues as the BMD sensor.. While some claim it is the same sensor as used with bmd..)

https://www.grassvalley.com/products/ldx_86_series i've seen these on a few jobs recently. The only 4k live production camera i've seen so far.

Trying to shoot live on any cine style camera is asking for trouble IMHO - most cine cameras are designed for multi-person operation. Short DOF / large sensor isn't idea for live where you have only one chance for each shot.

So maybe I should have just purchased the 40X40 6G instead of the 12G ?j
