Optical Fiber

PostWed Mar 13, 2013 8:30 am

This may be a stupid question but since I am new to optical fibers I hope to learn if I can use multiple BMD Optical Fiber converters on one fibre. What I understand they all use 1310nm so to be able to mux them into one fiber they need to be different wavelength, right?

I have read about DWDM and if I understand that right it means that you need different wavelengths from the beginning. So can the transceiver part be changed on the BMD and where can I find one that works (what do I need to look for)? I am also interested in cheap solutions for muxing the fibers (is DWDM the one I should be looking for?) and also adding regular GB ethernet to the same fiber.

Best regards

You need a dedicated fiber line for each converter pair

+1 ranger

although possible ... for any application where your using this type of equipment and since you said cheap solutions just get dedicated fibers ... you can get a tactical fiber cable consisting of 4,6,12,24 etc and be good to go to carry all your signals ... you can get media converters that are wdm for less than 100 bucks per side that can carry gige ... or better yet get switches that include interface for sfp products you can get a nice switch and sfp for 200 bucks ... gige is really a lot of bandwidth ...

we have a couple 24 port managed switches and run one gige link between them and have all the bandwidth we would ever need for control signals, internet, audio over ip, and kvm

we just bought some tac-12 with st ends ... they are bnc like connectors and basically the standard for ob/broadcast type applications pre terminated for close to 1.00 per foot.

wdm is a great concept for saving fiber lines but once you have to buy very specialized equipment to make what you need work any cost savings is out the window with how inexpensive fiber is today.

on a side note all bmd fiber products are compatible with other products that are smpte compliant and wavelength compatible as far as sdi signals go so you can mix and match manufactures

if your really into wdm a product called yellobrik by linxtechnik... they have plug and play fiber modules on different wavelengths for sdi over fiber

Ok, thanks guys. In this case I am not using in-house fiber but renting one across town. I found a great fiber manual at http://www.lynx-technik.com/fileadmin/u ... r-Rev2.pdf so I have to try to get their sfp modules to work with my mini converters for cwdm if I want to go that way.

Did you ever test these were the lynx sfp's compatible?
