ATEM Production Studio 4K - This may be what I need.

PostMon Apr 15, 2013 2:23 pm

OK, first off I know it isn't out yet but I'm hoping someone can at least lead me in the right direction.

I was looking at the ATEM Production Studio 4K found here:
http://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/atemproductionstudio4k

I currently have the TV Studio and feel this may be a nice step up in quality, function and price without going to the ATEM 1 or 2 ME. I especially like the addition of the XLR audio in/out which would reduce the amount of equipment I need in the small studio space.

I'm a little confused as to why they would make a 4K switcher with a price point between the 1/2 ME switchers rather than upgrading those but thats not the point of this post.

My question is this. Is this just a TV Studio with 4K capabilities and xlr out/in but without the built in encoder?
Also, about half way down the page there is a picture of a computer hooked up to, what looks like, a USB audio mixer. Do they sell this or is this a third party that will allow hardware control over the built in software mixer? I can't find it anywhere on their website. I attached an image of it from the 4K page

Thanks!

I think I found it. Can anyone confirm?

Also, If this is the unit there doesn't seem to be any information about it being compatible with Any of the ATEM units or anything by blackmagic.

Blackmagic doesn't make that product. The only audio product we have is the new Audio Monitor: viewtopic.php?f=13&t=6789

I think so, but it seams that you can use all 8 inputs and not ony 6 off them like in the TV studio.

That control console can be used as a controller to control the audio mixer inside your atem.

Embedded audio channels on SDI and HDMI. (channel 1 and 2 only)
Media players
External XLR audio

Some prefer that over a Mouse action.

For the video side you still need your computer or BMD control panel.

Remember that if you want to use the switcher in 4K mode. All your sources must be 4K too!! All the same resolution and framerate ;)

The software mixer seems like a good idea on the face of it, but the reality is that a separate mixer would be a much better solution. There is no equalisation available with the software mixer, and no dynamic control (limiter or compressor) so it's usefulness is actually very limited.
I love the new 4K. It looks fab and groovy, is very neat and as you say, has XLR inputs on it. The 1M/E however, has 3 aux video outputs and is in other ways, more flexible.

Bear in mind that the production studio atem has no input scalers, so to run 4k ALL your sources must output 4k.

I really hope they offer a 1080p firmware upgrade, 1080p 50/60 looks amazing and is far more achievable than 6G sdi (like there are studio cameras which output it!)

cheers

I'm not sure I get 4k at 30fps. 1080p 50/60 would be a huge bonus. Also I'm not sure about running 4k over sdi at any distance, most likely will need fiber.

Now to my question: If I use this to switch a live HD show can I also go program HDMI out --> intensity extreme ---> Laptop/Wirecast to live stream the show as well or will this not work?

Just purchased 4 BMPocket Cam, ATEM Production Studio 4K Switchers and UltraStudio 4K.
Now my question is Can I use Artist Mix control surface from Avid (already own one) with ATEM software control to control Audio mixer?
If not then can some please tell me where to find the list of compatible control surfaces with ATEM software control.

The ATEM Software supports the Mackie protocol (prob http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HUI_MIDI_mapping_protocol) so everything listed as compatible with it should do.

At least this is how i think it works.
