analog audio & embedded at the same time?

PostFri Mar 08, 2019 10:49 pm

We were looking at the Decklink 4k extreme and wondering if it's possible to capture embedded audio and analog audio at the same time? The reason we'd like to do this is, since Black Magic doesn't support LTC and it's often a requirement in our world, we would like to feed LTC to one of the analog inputs and decode it, while capturing the embedded audio with the clip. We write our own software, so all we need to know is if it can be done and any hints you might want to share on setting things up to do that.

Of course a dedicated LTC input would be even better  So just as an example, if one was using a Decklink Duo 2 just for capture, then the reference input isn't really needed, so if it could be configured as an LTC input then voila. One of your competitors does it that way, and at least for capture, it's a fine solution.

Thanks

I don't think this is possible. The DeckLink cards only capture from a single audio input at a time. This is switchable between HDMI/SDI embedded, analog XLR, or AES digital in the Desktop Video Setup utility (and can probably also be set via the DeckLink SDK). Multiple audio outputs can be active simultaneously, but the same is not true for audio inputs.

When set to capture audio from the analog or AES inputs, only 2-channel audio capture is possible, but 8- or 16-channel audio can be captured when using the HDMI or SDI embedded audio. So if you could embed the LTC timecode as an additional audio channel on the video signal, that might be one way to capture it.

Alternatively, the DeckLink cards do support RP188 encoded ancillary timecode over the SDI video input (the IDeckLinkVideoInputFrame::GetTimecode call via the SDK can be used to read SDI embedded timecode).

The UltraStudio 4K and UltraStudio 4K Extreme models have dedicated LTC timecode inputs (using XLR connectors), but unfortunately none of the internal DeckLink cards seem to include this.
