The new vertical workspace needs more flexibility

PostFri Apr 04, 2025 11:40 pm

On the color page, on a just 27" 4k monitor, the video is on the right taking just 10% of the space...
On the edit page, the effects panel is giant too.

And source clip in the source viewer should keep his original mode, landscape if it's a landscape video.

It only goes back to the size of the original clip when we click on the source tape icon (so the trick is to put the individual clip in along in a bin)

It's a bit of a mess.

EDIT:
When switching the timeline to landscape, then portrait... the source viewer stays in landscape.. until we scrub the video (and vis versa)

lol

Is it possible to go back to the previous workspace of 19 (without installing back 19)?

Just wanted to second this. The vertical workspace could be so amazing (almost all I edit is vertical content) but having it squished on the right is pretty much unusable on an ultra wide monitor. Definitely good we can go back to the old view, but would love to see some flexibility here. The edit page is okay once the inspector pushes the video more center but the color page is really rough. When you're doing any color grading the thing you look at the most is the video so it really needs to be centered for that page.

Hopefully it will be refined and worked on more because it's pretty much unusable in this current form.

For me this new vertical workspace is a worse experience for... vertical videos lol.

And they didn't even change the source viewer to keep the resolution of the videos. This was the one thing they could just change to make the experience better without even touching at the workspace yet.

When I have a 16:9 source that needs to be used in a vertical resolution, having the source viewer vertical is so irritating.

All they had to do was :
1) The source viewer shows the content at its.... original resolution.
2) Add a simple button to expand the viewer vertically

This should have been added ton a 19.x.x version, or even 18.x.x version a long time ago.
It's so minor changes that helps a lot, but are not even considered.

+1 BUT

I think the user should choose how they want to view the timeline, and not automatically view it based on the format resolution, as has been the case with not being able to view the vertical view in horizontal timelines even though the output is in vertical.

In addition, it would be great to be able to have 2 types of views at the same time.

That is, when using Dual Viewer Mode, you can view one timeline in vertical view and another in horizontal view. Currently, we basically have to choose whether we want to view horizontally or vertically; we can't use both types of different views. (And there is space for this, because in the new vertical mode, the mediapool takes up a lot of space horizontally).

Yes, of course.

But just this little change would work for every type of content in the source viewer, by default.
And it's pretty much in the name, "source" viewer, so we should be able to see the full source :)

I just reverted to the "old" workspace. I really, really hope they'll fix this source viewer so we can see every pixel of our "source" media to work on vertical videos (or square, or any type of resolution. The problem is not really limited to vertical video, every time a resolution is set in the setting, the source viewer takes it and everything that is not this resolution doesn't fit fully)

+1 for the suggestion that the source viewer should display the source aspect ratio. I often cut vertical videos from 16:9 sources. If I only see a 9:16 section of it, the talent is usually not even in frame because it was not filmed centered. This makes it impossible to judge whether a shot is usable.
It would be best if we could switch between source and timeline aspect ratio in the source viewer options.
