Playback in edit page-- slow at .5 to 1 FPS on ARM

PostSun Apr 06, 2025 5:34 pm

Device is a Windows Copilot PC (ARM) running Win11. Graphics driver is 31.0.84.0 ... manually updated maybe 3 weeks ago.
(Diagnostic log is here: https://1drv.ms/f/s!AsvU34nAW47kw61Io2F ... w?e=Jqt43N)

Installed
- Resolve 20 beta (standard) ... twice
- Resolve Studio 20 beta

All 3 of these installs have been basically unusable because the playback speed in the Edit page preview is stuck hovering at .5 FPS. While I'm "playing" video.. the entire app window is unresponsive until I stop.

I've tried MANY combinations of (a) source media and (b) proxy/source content .. details and examples explained below. Happy to try something else if there's something I missed!

Source Media
I tried an both an EXISTING project and I tried creating a NEW project ... both with content shot 1 year ago on a Canon R6 and Pixel smartphone. (1920x1080, 30fps, H.265 Main L5.1 and H.264 High L5.2)

All the content causes the unusable-stuttering/app freezing.

Sample content in this folder: https://1drv.ms/f/s!AsvU34nAW47kw61Io2F ... w?e=Jqt43N

Proxy and Native Media - Timeline settings
i've tried everythin I know how to get reasonable perf... nothing works:
- set preview resolution at 1/4
- select all the media, right-click "Generate Proxy Media"
- option to "Prefer Proxy Media" (and not!)
- Render cache on all three of the settings

I wonder if this is jsut an ARM PC thing? Getting ready to go back to Resolve 19 ... but really wanted to try this...

Update -- in the STUDIO version, playback is reasonable if I turn-on Smart cache and wait for it to get through clips and create the cached versions. It doesn't seem to matter whether the clips have proxies or not.. the Smart Cache-- WHEN IT GETS CREATED-- does achieve reasonable playback. However, it's been minutes and minutes and by far most of my 17 minute timeline is still red with no Smart Cache. Not sure how long I have to wait .. or whether I have to actively play clips.. to get it to build this cache. Doesn't seem liek it's particularly aggressive .. so maybe this is just a "hypothetical" solution and not a real one.

In the other scenarios ... still not workable. i would have expected once I built proxy files that playback should be OK with those? (or even with the camera originals which aren't particularly large or challenging, I would think).

Question: anyone have general advice on the right way to approach manually generating proxies if smart cache is the thing that seems to get me workable perf?

thanks!

UPDATE: I let Resolve sit for 12 hours (overnight) ... yes laptop power settings have it stay on and not go to sleep ... and the Smart Cache has NOT created some cached version of much of my timeline.

SO... I still have 80% of the clips in this particular project rendering at .5 FPS (unusable) with 20% of the clips having a cache built and rendering fine.

Anyone have ideas/suggestions? Kinda dead in the water with Resolve 20 because of this...

What codec is your proxy media set to? Might try a different one. Dnxhd would be a likely useful choice.

This as a workaround. Not sure why this is happening.
