Record Tool Pre-Roll for Drop-ins & Re-Record Button please

PostWed Apr 09, 2025 2:08 pm

Please add a Pre-Roll checkbox to the Record Tool to enable Voice-Over (VO) drop-ins.

>When activated, pressing the Record button should cause the play head to jump back by a specified pre-roll duration. It would play the pre-roll as a countdown, then start recording at 0.

>Please also add a Retake button. This would instantly reposition the playhead to the last record start point, enabling seamless retakes without having to find the drop in point again.

Both features are critical for efficient VO workflows and are widely considered staples in professional voice recording software. Nuendo / Cubase have implemented this best but most software has a pre-roll for drop-ins and simple retake options.

Context for Implementation:
In radio, TV, and VO studios, pre-roll drop-ins are essential to streamline recording sessions:
>Pre-Roll Drop-Ins: Allow voice artists to jump seamlessly back into a sentence after a mistake. Rewinding a few seconds gives them a chance to hear and start reading preceding words, helping them match tone and flow. It also eliminates the "full breath" effect when starting mid-sentence or mid phrase and reduces unnecessary lengthy retakes. This method is faster and keeps the artist's edged compared to starting at the last natural pause.

>Retake Button: Saves time by quickly jumping the playhead back to the beginning of the last recording attempt. This is a no brainer. It can be a mic icon with an arrow just next to the current round mic icon button.
>The retake button alternate function could jump to the record start and action the record button immediately too although I think this should be an option in the dropdown menu.

These features are common VO techniques designed to improve efficiency, reduce session time, and maintain the flow.

I have made a separate post regarding suggestions to address issues:
