New SLR Magic 12mm Lens is out

PostWed Dec 04, 2013 9:08 pm

The new, improved SLR Magic 12mm Cine lens is out, mine arrived TODAY from Adorama. Focus and Iris gear rings are part of the lens now, looks more like their 25mm lens. Mount is much tighter on the BMPCC that the previous hour-glass shaped lens, focus is smoother and not as tight. Iris control is firmer, and will not move on its own. Price is the same, listed on Adorama site, but their photo is not current.
Photos and more to come...

I checked and no one has one in stock. Is there some place I'm not aware of that has one in stock?

Joshua,

I pre-ordered one from Adorama last month, and it was shipped this week, got it Tuesday. Adorama is official supplier in US for SLR Magic lenses from what I gather. Somthe new 12mm lens is in shipping.

Ah, so you have to order it while it is out of stock and then just wait until Adorama gets more... Sounds familiar.

Are you pleased with the IQ on the BMPCC?

Is there a difference in IQ compared to the old one?
E.g. the old one has extreme lens flares at full aperture.

Was it anamorphic-like lens flares that JJ Abrams would be proud of?

A storm has set in, not able,to test for lens flare yet. According to SLR, it is supposed to be same optics, different lens barrel, mounting.

That looks alright but I suppose it would be annoying if it was happening all the time.

I did some test with a street lamp at night.

At 1.6 the flares a very strong. At 2.0 they are less. At around 4 they are at a minimum. And increase again with bigger aperture numbers. The picture above is at 8 or 11 I think.
At 4 the lens is very sharp.

But: with a lens hood (simulated by hand) the flares dissapear significantly. So I would suggest to buy it with it.

I like the lens really for stills. Wait to can test it on the bmpcc.

Have you checked to make sure it isn't the ND filter or anything else you're putting in front of the lens?

Yes. There is no filter, nor dust.
There are some reviews of the 12/1.6 in the internet. They all say nearly the same.

The only things that barely mentionend are: Flares increase again from 5.6 to higher aperture numbers.
And the flares especially at 1.6 are reduced with a lens hood. The olympus 12/2.0 comes with lens hood I think.

Trying to get my hands on this lens but also considering the tokina 11-16. Would prefer this for it's faster 1.6 aperture. Sucks there's no way of knowing when it'll be in stock.

Olympus prefers to sell their lens hoods separately for quite a price.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

While the 12mm SLR Magiv is not IS, at 12mm and adding the lens' weight, it is quite easy to get good handheld images for short takes, using a sholder rig, even better. Lens flair is controlled with a Hood, even if just a 58-77 SLR Magic step up ring, acts like a short hood. Weather finally cleared here, will get some test shots posted.

A couple of days after Denny started this thread I went ahead and pre-ordered the lens from Adorama and I got shipment confirmation yesterday. So I'm guessing that this lens will often stay in back-ordered status and they (Adorama) just ship them to the next in line as soon as they get them in. It only took about a week for mine to ship, so not too bad.

Finally got my hand son this lens via craigslist. It's not the new, new version but I actually prefer the look of the previous version as it gives it a vintage feel.
