Dear Devs: Important Basic Timeline Features Are Missing

PostFri Feb 23, 2024 2:33 pm

Dear DaVinci Resolve Developers,

I have been using Adobe Premiere for 10 years now and I really wanna to fully switch Davinci, I tried several time to switch during Version 16,17, and now 18, but this short list has always stopped me from fully switching over.

I have even purchased the speed editor/studio bundle and it wasn't enough

However I have been encountering several VERY frustrating issues that have been reported many times before, some since 2017 or even earlier. These are very basic features to implement that are key for people like me who got used to fast responsive and precise editing on Adobe Premiere.

Note I am talking about just the act of slicing and ripple deleting for the initial cuts.
For everything else, Davinci has way more advanced features.

----------------------------

The Missing Feature List:

- Timeline Pause When Scrubbing:
Pause/freeze/stop playback when play head is moved while timeline is playing
In Premiere you can do just that, so at least give us the option to toggle on or off this feature.
In Davinci you have to hit space bar then move the playhead, big time waster

- Add Edit / Slice / Ripple Delete While Scrubbing without letting go of the playhead
In Premiere you can hold on to the playhead while "Selection Follows Playhead" is enabled to cut and
ripple/delete as you wish
In Davinci you have to let go of the play head, then do your edits which is a major time waster

- Stop Timeline shifting to show play head during playback
We need to be able to stop this behavior, to be able to continue looking at waveforms or in combination with the top mentioned problems
Premiere has multiple different options for timeline behavior during playback once it touches the end of the current visible timeline.

- Holding the playhead while hitting spacebar to play, causes the video to play, and pause / return to original starting position when letting go of the playhead.
Weird behavior, Im sure there is use for this, so it would be nice if we can have the option to disable that.

----------------------------

I believe these features will push a lot of people to finally switching over to Davinci.

At this time, using Davinci is like using a Controller for gaming, or playing fps games with mouse acceleration on, while premiere feels like using keyboard and mouse with raw mouse input on.

Davinci has lots of awesome features that make editing very enjoyable but getting to the fun part requires getting through the tedious part of cutting the footage down.

Premiere feels way more responsive and gives way more control when it comes to the most basic part of editing which is trimming.

To have the best exposure I will post this on Reddit and YouTube until someone responds from the dev team, even if its takes a couple months to add these features, at least the message has reached.

Thanks For Your Time & Effort

I have the exact opposite feeling... :)

But i also believe in options for everyone if they are logically organized.

If I'm using the blade tool, the preview scrubs over the clip under the mouse cursor (except during playback, of course). Maybe that's a good workaround in the meantime?

Toggle would be neat, but it's definitely something I'm gonna save for my next supervised drop-in/review session in lieu of a marker and arrows.

+1 to Kommando post
Same feelings, same questions

+ changing Shift+Left/Right jump duration. Now it is only 1 sec, but if I have 500+ "diffuse" transitions that lasts 0.5 s, or 3 s, or whatever else - I've spent a lot of time to ajust correct playhead positions while in APP I set correct jump duration and just press Shift+Left/Right and in a one keypress jumps to the start/end of the found transition end/stard. :(
