Best stabilized lens for BMPCC + Metabones combo?

PostFri Dec 20, 2013 6:16 pm

Hey all,

I'm considering the BMPCC, but only in conjunction with a Metabones adapter because I'd need the extra field of view and stop of light. However, in seeing countless handheld videos, it's quite clear that any lens I'd use needs stabilization.

I know my EF electronic lenses won't work with Metabones (yet), so I'm wondering what stabilized lens folks who have the Metabones are going to use? Nikon doesn't have a lot of stabilized lenses, and no stabilized primes.

It's funny, I would think this question would've been asked a million times but I haven't seen it. Any thoughts? Thanks!

You can only get stabilization if you use a MFT lens. Metabones is not an active mount so you can't use stabilization.

IS aside, the Sigma 18-35 f/1.4 (nikon mnt) and the speed booster is your best low light combo lens.
For MFT the Panasonic 12-35 f/2.8 has IS, and gives decent results, and can be hand held.

It seems the 12-35 is the best lens with IS to go for. The Sigma 18-35 with the bmpcc speed booster also sounds like the best wide angle lens too..

I'm still trying to get my bearings with the crop factors calculations in relation to the camera and now this new speed booster but would I be right in saying the sigma 18-35 would be a nice wide lens at 11.5-22.5mm with the booster and the 12-35 would remain a effective 36-105 on the BMPCC?

Panasonic 12-35mm would have the angle of view of approximately a 35-101mm lens on a full-frame camera.

Sigma 18-35mm MFT lens would roughly look like a 52-101mm lens on a full-frame camera.

Sigma 18-35mm lens on the Metabones MFT adapter (0.71x) would roughly look like a 37-72mm lens on a full-frame camera.

Sigma 18-35mm lens on the Metabones BMPCC adapter (0.58x) would roughly look like a 30-58mm lens on a full-frame camera.

Most of the videos are people just going out with their pocket naked and probably using lenses that are too tight.

I've been able to achieve very usable handheld footage without IOS(feel like I'm taking about the iphone, lol) The key is adding weight to the pocket and using a lens at least 12mm or wider.

Here's a super quick, just woke up in the morning test with the slr magic. All handheld.

Now I'm not saying you shouldn't try to get a lens with IOS, but just opening up the possibilites that's handheld is achievable without one. I would image on a shoulder rig you can also keep the camera stable.

Re: Best stabilized lens for BMPCC + Metabones combo?

When you are shooting with the Pocket, you need to think Super 16, not DSLR 35mm.
17mm - normal lens 45-degree angle of view (hand hold w/o IS)
12mm - std wide lens 61-degree angle of view this gives a nice wide angle shot (go 10mm-8mm for wider)
5mm - 7mm are Ultra Wide 91-111-degree angle of view
25-30mm Short Tele 27-24-degree angle of view
35mm - 23-degree angle of view (Short Tele)
45mm - 17.5-degree angle of view (Std Short Tele)

So if you start with the "normal angle of view" 17mm lens you go up or down for wide to tele to get the angle of view for your shot, with 12mm, 17mm, 35/45mm your primary Prime Set to start with,
So the 13-35 zoom covers 12-35 "normal" shooting range for most shots.
You can go,with 3-fast primes, like SLR Magic 12mm, Olympus/Voightlander 17.5mm, and Panny/Leica 45mm (which has OIS, and works for hand held short takes). All of these are f1.X lenses.

A very good list from Denny.

As he says you need to free yourself from the crop factor and think of the format.

In the days of film a standard set of primes would have been something like this:
Super16: 9.5, 12, 16 and 25mm
Super35: 18, 25, 35, 50 and 85mm

Sure, but they need electrical connection too…
No, an iGPU is not enough, and you can't use HEVC 10 bit 4:2:2 in the free version.

You can use the Panasonic MA1 adapter for 4/3rds to MFT. Lens must have OIS/IS switch on them for the Pocket camera to support this feature. I have the 12-50 Panany/Leica zoom w/OIS, and it works. Also the Panny/Leica 45mm lens has IS, and works with the Pocket camera.

That Sigma lens, which I agree is the best lowlight option, is actually f/1.8 (before you calculate for the speed booster boostings).

Sorry, I'm just here to point out people's grammatical errors apparently, and offer nothing to the conversation.

Get the BMPCC speed booster when it comes back in stock (but not until I get to order mine!) and then get the Sigma 18-35. Hold her steady and use warp stabilizer in AE or Premiere later if you need to.

I've been using that combination of Pocket SpeedBooster and Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 for a couple of days now and am very pleased by the results. Actually i prefer to hold the combination in hand, the lens is quite heavy and i don't want it to break the speedbooster or the camera... will be a couple more days until i build a simple rig to support the lens.

The sigma 18-35 has a limited zoom range, just enough to find a good camera position and then adjust the framing to the best, but combined with the speedbooster this lens is amazingly fast and tack sharp - best investment i made.

I've read this a few times, however my personal experience with the 12-35 isn't that great. The OIS is nothing like the kind I've got used to with Canon IS lenses. I seriously have to hold my breath and concentrate really hard to get anything near a stable shot.

I have wondered whether this is unique to me and that I might have a bad lens or camera. Or it may just be Delirium Tremens.

I've used mine a lot, and even at full zoom if i'm careful I can get a nice stabilised shot. At the wide end of the lens fully handheld it's a dream to be honest. Always best to have some points of contact though of course. I have a viewfinder to my eye which helps when i'm going gorilla!

I also have the Pocket Speed Booster and Sigma 18-35 and have been debating whether to support the lens with the same combination myself. Some people seem to think that support is unnecessary with this combination, but I can't help but fear for the mount. How did you arrive at the conclusion that lens support was necessary yourself?

I actually took a stab at supporting the lens with this http://www.amazon.com/EzFoto-Making-Sup ... 00B7EQHYQ/ but found the plate that attached to the Swiss Arca mount of the speed booster blocked the lens support from moving far enough up the rails to support the lens.

What do you plan to use to support the lens?

Just a feeling. At the moment i'm using the speed booster as the mounting point, this way the camera mount only has to carry the cameras own weight - but still i'm not comfortable. I'm waiting for some longer rods and a general lens support to attach to my dslr cage and/or shoulder rig, due to xmas frenzy all packages take longer these days. I guess i'll have to wait until next year...

Why would the rigging you linked to not work? I'm looking at a similar solution...

With the Sigma lens (and similar large zooms) you need to add a spacer block under the Pocket cam, to get clearance between rods and lens body, which increases in diameter as you get to the end.

In looking at the picture again it does seem like it should have. Mine did not come with a screw on the camera plate and I didn't have access to one, so perhaps I'd of spent more time with it and discovered it would have worked out if it had. If you pick this up or something similar, can you let me know how you make out?

I'm considering the

Sigma 18-35mm f1.8
and the
Sigma 30mm f1.4 (=17,4mm f0.8 on speed booster, 21,6mm f1 on lens cannon, 30mm f1.4 with normal adapter)
for my x0.58 BMPCC Speed Booster.

I already have a vintage 50mm f1.4 Ai to play around.

Usage would be low light filming on tripod. (So OIS doesn't matter.)
An aperture ring would be nice but the Speed Booster already has one (it does not offer >f8 but that's of no consequence for low light)
Daylight and handheld would be done with modern glass
Panasonic 12-35 f2.8 Power-OIS, 25mm Pan/Leica f1.4, 14mm Panasonic, 14-45 OIS Panasonic

Any suggestions?
Is there another 28mm

10mm = wide (*1/0,58=17mm Nikon G)
16mm = normal (*1/0,58=28mm Nikon G)
28mm = long portrait (*1/0,58=48mm Nikon G)
on Super 16

Nice, but Panny is coming out with a 15mm 1.7 that is sharper than the 14mm. You could have a nice Prime set with the Panny/ Leica 15mm, 25mm, and the 45mm 2.8. All will work on the BMPCC, the 45mm has OIS, and it works, you can handhold it for short shots, also the 45 makes for a nice mid tele for head and sholder shots. Also the 12mm SLR Magic is a nice wide.
For your nikon 17mm, Tokina made a nice 17mm 3.5, which with the Speed booster gives you either a 12mm or 10mm 2.8 ( MFT/BMPCC).

As mentioned I already have the Pan/Leica 25mm f1.4. It's actually my go-to lens for the GH2.
But none of the lenses you mention comes close to an f1.0 zoom and f0.8 primes for the stated purpose of low light tripod shots. I'm looking towards other f1.4 or f1.2 Nokia G-Mount lenses.

A 17mm f3.5 is nice and wide but kind completely defeats the purpose of a Speed Booster adding 1 1/3 stops of light.

When there's more light I'm using the 12-35mm f2.8 Power-OIS.
I'm currently selling both my f0.95 Voightländer because they are too soft for my taste.

The 45mm you propose for portraits is equivalent to the field of view of 135mm on full frame or 67mm on regular MFT (72mm on the GH2 in 16:9). That's a bit longer then a 85mm portrait.
Your proposed 15mm f1.7 is not exactly wide. My 14mm f1.8 is actually closer to a normal focal length then to a wide angle.

You have to consider that MFT is 4/3" and thus larger then super16. Even if you consider that most MFT cameras have to crop to get 16:9. (The GH2 being the exception with it's multi-aspect sensor that is effectively larger then regular 4/3" when used for 16:9.)

Have i made the right choice? I am worried the mount may be wrong, it states 'For Nikon' in the listing title, but scrolling down under 'specs' it says Canon EF mount, is this the same as 'For Nikon'?
Also if i do have the right lens, can someone fire me a link to the right metabones speedbooster for this lens? - as i am paranoid about ordering the wrong one. I don't seem to know how to PM people on this forum, so I apologize for mentioning it here, I couldn't see any other way out.
I suggest you contact the seller right away to clarify whether this is a Canon or a Nikon mount. Canon EF mount is not the mount you want to work with the current BMPCC Speed Booster. You want the Nikon F mount version of this lens.

As a note, I have found that eBay listing titles do not always match item descriptions. If you ordered the wrong mount, you might be able to get the seller to cancel with little pain, depending on timing and seller.

Marcus,

The 17mm is a "normal" lens for Pocket/Super16. It is wide, only when you use it with the Speedbooster, which adds one stop (not 1/3) stop more light, making it a 2.8, still not a 1.4 though. The MFT 45mm is a 135mm (mid tele) in S16, and for interview situations, where you do not want the camera on top do the subject, this works very nice. Also, 45mm is more of a "normal" perspective for shooting at tight head and shoulder shot without distortion, from a wider lens.

I used the 25mm for a wider 3/4's shot or to get two subjects in the frame. I also used these lenses on Panny AF100 MFT 16:9 camera, while the 45 was great, it was still a little wide for close up head and shoulder shots, but was great for the 2/3rds shot and a two person shot, and chroma key green screen shots. I do location lectures, and the 45 with the Pocket camera is perfect to get a nice tight shot of the speaker from behind the audience.

No one lens is good for all situations. You need both a nice "Prime Lens" set, and a good zoom, going wide to med. tele. The Panny 12-35 is a very nice lens with OIS for handheld shots, or the Sigma Nikon mount 18-35 in combo with the Speedbooster, but it does not have OIS.

There are currently three versions of the Metabones Speed Booster that work with the BMPCC. Since I have a BMCC and a BMPCC, I bought the Speed Booster version that works with both cameras. There is also a version that works only with BMPCC, and a version that works with other Micro Four Thirds (MFT) cameras.

You should first decide if you need the Speed Booster to work with any other MFT cameras (BMCC, GH4, etc.), or only with the BMPCC.

Best if only used on the BMPCC:

Best if used on BMPCC and BMCC:

So just quickly: Seeing as my BMPCC does not use a full frame sensor, the Nikon 18-35mm lens with the three different metabones adapters would be equivalent to what?

a) With the Metabones MFT?
b) With the Metabones BMCC?
c) With the Metabones BMPCC?

People are telling me that best choice is to go for the Metabones BMPCC speed booster,
but it seems that from full zoom in to full zoom out it,s still seriously wide, is this right?

If someone could answer a), b) & c) then i would know if to go for the MFT speed booster (which I could also use on my GH2), or the BMPCC (Or even the BMCC), depending on how desireable the zoom range is.

Metabones SAYS that they will soon be coming out with a self powered MFT to EF speedbooster that will power aperture, electronic focus like on the Canon 85mm f/1.2, and Image Stabilization.

Of course, as we are all painfully aware, "soon coming out with" and "able to buy it and it works" are two different things, so caveat emptor and all that.

Still, assuming that IS is available on a BMCC, maybe an EF version without a speedbooster etc, is IS really as helpful for filmmakers as it seems?

I have limited experience, so i welcome the comments of those who have used it to good effect, but I found that in any moving shot, whether a pan, a shoulder mounted walking shot, or a steadycam walking shot, that there was a lot of judder as the lens tried to stabilize until it got past its tolerance, and then recentered with a jolt.

I can imagine that IS is helpful on a stable handheld shot.

I'd love to hear comments to either side of this one. What are your experiences?

That electronic MFT to EF SpeedBooster was announced early last year or even before that.
I'm not waiting.

Best stabilized lens for BMPCC + Metabones combo?

The BMPCC crop factor is x2.88 when compared to a full frame DSLR. So you 18mm would have a FOV of 51mm on a Full Frame DSLR like the 5D. This is similar to a 32mm on a ASP-C sensor.

The Speedbooster's reduce this crop factor of the lens by:
A - x0.71
B - x0.64
C - x0.58

So the 18mm now has a FOV of:
A - 36mm (22mm on ASP-C)
B - 33mm (20mm on ASP-C)
C - 30mm (18mm on ASP-C)

*all values are approximate.

As you can see they are all close. Depends if you need the extra FOV.

If you only have the BMPCC the C is a good option. The 18-35 would then look like it does on an ASP-C camera.

So to put in layman's terms, a Nikon 18-35mm lens on a BMPCC using the following Metabones adapters will give you the following FOV range:

a) MFT: 36-74mm
b) BMCC: 33-61mm
c) BMPCC: 30-58mm

This is very useful to know before ordering a pricy speed booster.

Remember that (M)FT and BMPCC have different sensor sizes.
30-58 on a super16 sensor is something else then 30-58 on a 4/3" sensor.

Dude i dont think so (I could be wrong though I will admit), but the BMPCC sensor has a 2.88 crop factor and the Metabones BMPCC speed booster 'crops' x 0.58 so if you work it out i think I have the right figures.....Otherwise i would love to know if its different.

2.88? I thougt it was 3.0.
Anyway, 2.88*0.58 != 2.0

Extrapolating...

With the Sigma 18-35 (Nikon) on a BMPCC could I effectively elect to use a standard MFT adapter or a BMPCC Speedbooster and yield a 30-101mm equivalent with just the one lens? (differences in light levels aside)

Seems like a great way to squeeze every bit out of that capable lens... (ignoring IS for a moment, assuming tripod/studio environment)

I think you'll find that (unless y calculator is trying to make an idiot out of me)
2.88 * 0.58 is NOT 2 but is instead 1.67
multiply 1.67 by 18 (18m) and you'll get 30.....

Here is a Speed Booster calculator we have linked to before. An update for the newer Speed Boosters is promised, but I think this still has value:

I had a plain adapter for Nikon mount on the Sigma 18-35, and the adapter broke. I'm assuming it's because it was only held on by three tiny screws to the lens, and a cheap Chinese brand. But now I won't risk it anymore.

Thank you for the feedback! I guess metabones' speedbooster is quite sturdy, but i wouldn't risk breaking it - so now I've built myself a tiny rig to support the lens.
