[Feature Request] Relinking DCTLs & Missing DCTLs folder

PostSat Jun 29, 2024 9:04 pm

A feature for relinking DCTLs + a better list of missing DCTLs.

This would allow:
- Opening a project with DCTLs on another system where they are in a different path.
- Reorganizing DCTLs in the LUTs folder after using them in projects

Possible implementation:
- Creating a "Missing DCTLs" folder in the LUT browser with the ability to relink
- Switching out the hoard of "The [name].dctl is missing" messages for one message pointing the user to this new Missing DCTLs folder.
- Adding a similar viewer overlay to the "Missing LUT: [lut]" for DCTLs to make it clear which DCTLs are missing on a given clip.

Both DCTL and LUTs need some love regarding paths and relinking.

Highlight the clip (and node) that is responsible for the "missing DCTL" message would also help to make relinking easier.

I would like the same for Luts as well.

You can use file system soft links to point to alternative folders with a different set of DCTL's.

Yes but it doesn't solve the main probleme : need to copy the LUT or CDTL in the exact same subpath because there is no way to point the file. We should be able to relink LUT or a folder of LUTs like medias. Simple.

If we work with many colorists and studios, the LUT folder become a jungle because each one have is own way to organize LUTs.

Like having project based LUTs and DCTLs?

I've been asking for such a feature at least for LUTs because often LUTs are used for just single projects only and really belong to only that project. Do that 50+ times per year and your Resolve LUT dir is totally filled with entries you never want to use on other projects.

If DCTLs and LUTs would have path connections like any other media, you can relink them but also not be forced to store them in a specific location. They could sit with the other media for that particular project instead of being part of Resolve's database.

I agree on this part but according to me there's 3 cases :
- LUTs related to projects : mainly about dailies (created specifically with
cinematographer)
- LUTs related to users : colorists "preset" (used on several project)
- LUTs related to system/facilities : bank, camera manufacturer, color space transform (used on many project)

(working on movies and series in a lab)

User LUTs - local LUTs folder
Facility LUTs - shared LUT folder on a NAS
Project LUTs - this we don't have a good system for at the moment.

It would be great to have a better system to deal with Luts and DCTL relinking.

To me, it would be enough if you could drag and drop LUTs and DCTL in the media page like you do for unlinked media, wich would automatically relink from the new path.

That would Solve most of the issues.

Another way would be the ability to scanning the all LUT folder looking for the missing LUT/ DCTL that maybe in a different subfolder.
