BMPCC 6K PRO - 2 USB Devices at the same time?(SSD + GIMBAL)

PostThu Aug 15, 2024 7:27 am

Hello all,

I wanted to ask a quick question to see if anyone had tried to use multiple USB devices on something like a USB Hub with the BMPCC 6K PRO.

I want to use both the DJI RS4 Pro on USB and a USB SSD at the same time.
Using that gimbal's focus wheel at the moment is only possible by USB connection, as per their compatibility page - which is an important feature I'd need.

If anyone knows the answer I'd be very grateful to hear if you've had success.
It would also be useful to know if you ran into any read/write speed limitations, as I'd love to still record in BRAW at the highest rate - if possible.

If I don't hear anything I'll probably give this setup a go anyway and see what happens and report back.

Thanks all.

Have you tried Bluetooth instead of cable? It should be compatible.

You have only one USB-C port, I'd use it for SSD and Bluetooth connection for Gimbal's controls.

Good morning,

In response to this:
I've checked on the DJI RS4 Pro compatability page and the bluetooth connection function doesn't support electronic focus control with the bmpcc 6k pro - which will be needed. But the USB connection to the gimbal does support that.

As a general update:
I've done a little more digging around reddit and YouTube, the answer I came accross seemed to be that 2 devices on a USB hub would not work.
Something to do with master /slave modes on the USB port being different for gimbal and ssd operation.

Now looking into either M.2 SSD through a CFAST adapter or shelling out for a CFAST card.

Still holding out hope that somewhere someone has managed to get both gimbal USB control and SSD working though - it really does seem to be the best option for recording that high Q0 BRAW and using the gimbal's autofocus control on compatible lenses.

I've always used CFAST cards when on a gimbals for exactly that reason. A farily simple solution. Is there a problem with doing that?

I'm coming round to the CFAST idea.
Mainly just a price per GB and wanting to record at BRAW Q0 with the gimbal lead me down the SSD route.
Also It didn't seem too obvious which brand of CFAST cards would have stable enough write speeds to accomplish that Goal of Q0, or if it were possible. I need to research more and maybe just accept the compromise of 5:1 BRAW. Which should be fine honestly. Though I liked the idea of being able to record 30+minutes of footage in a single go.

Perhaps you might be able to share you experience. Which CFAST card(s) do you use, what quality have you been able to record in and how many minutes of footage does that give you? (And price hahaha(

This was the case prior to a few firmwares ago. When they added network file management the usb hub thing was unlocked. With the M4kG2 at least the camera can manage simultaneous file access, ethernet, and camera control.

Good Luck

Here’s an official list of recommended media.

I use Angelbird for my BMCC6K.

This might help to determine write speed and file size. It’s meant for bmcc6k, but just to get a rough idea.
