iPhone 16 Pro's video jumps when stabilization is on

PostWed Oct 02, 2024 2:51 pm

Hello guys
I'm experiencing an issue with video recording on the Blackmagic camera app using my iPhone 16 Pro. When I move the phone horizontally with stabilization mode on (standard, cinematic, extreme), the video jumps. This occurs with every lens and stops when the stabilization mode is off. I assume there's an issue with the app's stabilization. What can I do to fix this, or has anyone else experienced the same issue and found a solution?

I have a sample clip here.
Thanks in advance.

You need to open access to that clip. Is it the original recording?

I have the same problem and I'm pissed off. Having upgraded to the new phone, I can't used the BM Camera App? This doesn't happen in native camera app just to be clear. Any work from BlackMagic about what's happening to fix this would be great.

I observe similar issues with the iPhone 15 Pro Max. It shows close to CFR without any stabiliser on, but the stronger the stabilisation, the more variation of the frame rate. I'm afraid this is a limitation caused by computational power, not the app itself. Please remember, that this is still primarily a phone, not mean to be just a camera.

I saw image jumps immediately on using my ProMax 16. I didn't see this at all with my PM15.

Since the 16 has a more advanced processor than the 15, I'm not sure it's processor overload related.

The native Apple video app shows no such instability.

Shooting 4K at 30 fps with ProRes 422 HQ HDR, I don’t notice any irregular movement on my iPhone 14 Pro. Turning stabilization On does reduce my apparent resolution on the monitor, but panning motion looks smooth.

It might be something else then, I don't have a 16 around to compare. Maybe BM needs to further adapt the app to the new phones.

I have the same problem, but only when I shoot in x5 + Standard stabilisation.

I don't have the same problem with Off stabilisation, nor in Cinematic or Extreme.

What happens with Cinematic and Extreme stabilization is that it doesn't apply the LUT of the screen...(I?)

I hope they will fix it quickly.

Cheers !!!

I also have the same problem on a new iPhone 16 Pro I’m shooting H.265, standard stabilization in 4K at 60 fps. I get the jumping every few seconds.

Potential Fix:

Blackmagic Camera for iOS 2.1 Update! Get support for using new iPhone 16 camera control features with Blackmagic Camera, improved Blackmagic Cloud organisation syncing and new recording bit rate options for H.264 and H.265 codecs. Download now from https://apps.apple.com/us/app/blackmagi ... 6449580241

However, at moment not showing in Apple App Store. So maybe a delay on Apple's end.

It looks like that "Latest News" post has been removed as of tonight. Bummer. Hopefully the 2.1 update officially happens soon. Really would like the iPhone 16 to be better supported.

So, I just downloaded the update and this issue sadly still persists in 2.1. For any Blackmagic engineers who aren't familiar with this issue and want to repro it:

[*] Use an iPhone 16 Pro with the Blackmagic Camera app
[*] Ensure image stabilization is on
[*] Pick a lens since like 0.5x or 5x
[*] Move the phone around slowly
[*] Observe that the image will appear to jump around by maybe a couple dozen pixels every so often

Would love acknowledgement that this issue is known and in the queue to be addressed. Hoping for a fix soon!

Thanks!

They have acknowledged the issue in this thread and are talking to Apple about it.

It sounds like you're experiencing a common issue with digital stabilization on certain apps. You could try updating the Blackmagic camera app or reinstalling it to see if that resolves the bug. Also, check if there are any settings within the app or iPhone’s system settings related to stabilization that need adjustments. Let me know if that helps.
