anamorphic lenses 1.5x

PostFri Feb 21, 2025 1:12 pm

Hi there,

This would be my first time using anamorphic lenses.
My camera is a bmpcc 6k and I would like to use some Blazar 1.5x anamorphic lenses.
There is only an anamorphic mode , the 3.7k anamorphic mode which expects a 2x squeeze.
There is an open gate 6k , 3:2 mode too, if i'm not mistaken

1. What mode do you recommend?
2. My preview monitor has several desqueze modes 16:9, 1.89:1, 2.35:1.
What should I use to have an usable preview image?

Thank you.

Your camera, similar in age as the BMPCC4K that I use, probably behaves the same way. The older cameras only offer a 2x or 1.33x desqueeze and you have no control over the selection.

The newest cameras offer several desqueeze options and give the shooter control over the selection of desqueeze. I don’t expect BMD to offer this on the older cameras.

I don’t know what to suggest if your camera won’t let you select a 1.33x desqueeze for the monitor which is close enough to 1.5x that you could still see a reasonable image.

The other option is to get used to the squeezed image the Blazar is showing you. Not ideal, but might be tolerable with practice.

Regarding your point 2: those are frame guides not desqueeze options. They won’t be helpful to improve your monitor frame in terms of the desqueeze. They are helpful if you intend to deliver in one of the resolutions such as 2.39:1 as that will show you the portion of the monitor view your deliverable resolution uses.
