Can't drop audio into timeline

Newbie here. I was moving along well until I tried to drop an audio track. Track (.wav)is already in media
I noticed my DR does not have the toolbar with the position lock, link symbol and magnet.
Also, on the bottom right of my screen, there is no slot for audio.
There are 2 tracks each with a V and an A, but selecting them seems to do nothing.
I'm using the free version. Maybe that's the problem.

Any help would be great.

I figured it out. I just right clicked on the lower left, where tracks are stacked and was able to make an empty audio track. Then, I was able to drop the audio file into the timeline.
Seems to be that clicking on the bottom will give options for an audio track, and clicking on top will do the same for a video track.

I thought I cold simply drag the audio down and drop it, like I did everything else. Nope.

Any help would be great.
