This project library name is already in use

PostFri May 05, 2023 3:32 am

Hi

this may not be for everyone.

I recently changed my PC motherboard which unfortunately required a reinstall of Windows. I had a number of Project libaries which I needed to import into a fresh install of DaVR. I successfully imported 3 of the 6 by using the Add Project Library button > then selecting "Connect" rather than "Create" and specifiying the project library path. After importing the Local database successfully, the next import resulted in the projects being displayed in the projects page but the Project library name did not appear under the list of Project Libraries. A subsequent attempt to create the same library resulted in:
This project library name is already in use .
I restarted DaVR and still only 3 Project Libraries were displayed in the list.

I found the following file:
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve\Preferences\dblist.conf
a text file, which contained the list of Project Libraries I had imported and attempted to import. It showed 6 libraries of which only 3 were being displayed in the Project Library list in DaVR. The 3 missing libraries were the ones listed after the Local Database. I moved these three to the start of the file, saved and restarted DaVR. All 6 of the libraries were then listed in the Project Libraries list in DaVR.

This sounds like a bug and I suppose if you never have to do what I did or else you use the backup and restore method you will never encounter this problem.

I thought I would share as it had me confused for a while.

I had exactly the same problem.

I am on Fedora linux 40 with DvR Studio version 19.0.3

so on a linux system the files reside in,

~/.local/share/DaVinciResolve/configs/

and are named .dblist and .activedb although .activedb which registers the last active project library may not play a role in this. Anyway, it can happen apparently that while duplicating or creating or reconnecting project libraries something gets messed up (maybe due to invalid/erroneous location specifications) and then the entries in the .dblist file become stale even after you have disconnected the relevant project libraries.

When you now remove those entries manually from the .dblist file, the message : "project library name is already in use" goes away, but you still can't see those entries in the project manager gui after you successfully create or duplicate or reconnect them.

So I fixed that by moving the .dblist (and .activedb although I don't know if this is really necessary) out of the way and then start DvR. It will then recreate the .dblist (and .activedb) files and only the "Local Database" entry will show up. After this duplicating/creating project libraries will start to show up again in the project manager gui.

So then I manually appended the relevant entries from the moved away .dblist file to the one that DvR recreated, and then suddenly all entries show up again in the projectmanager gui.

So, notice this : in my case it was not necessary to prepend these entries before the "Local Database" entry, it also worked by appending them after the "Local Database" entry.

So, apparently after letting DvR recreate the .dblist file, whatever got messed up gets cleaned up again. And if it only works by prepending those entries before the "Local Database" entry, but not after, my guess is that something is still not right, and after the "Local Database" entry gets read in, something gets messed up which causes the next entries not to show up anymore.

So after letting DvR recreate the .dblist file everything gets cleaned up and appending works again. At least, this worked for me.

Have a nice day!

Hi Ondrej

this happened to me again. I remember posting this previously and editing the dblist seemed to work. It happened again today; I added a Project library in DVR but it did not appear in the list. I then referred to your post which reminded me that I needed to place line containing the reference to the "Local" database last in C:\Users\Greg.MAINPC\AppData\Roaming\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve\Preferences\dblist.conf.
