Sharpening creates white edges

When I apply sharpening to my video, the edges turn white as in the still image below. The more sharpening, the more white it turns. I have exaggerated it somewhat in the picture below in order to show this more clearly.

I have tried videos with black sidebars and videos without sidebars. But the result is the same no matter what.

Is there any way to prevent this from happening?
I notice that if I set my project settings timeline to the same size of the video, it won't show any lines. Can I add the black bars somehow after sharpening the video?
