R 20 b3
OS 15.5
M1 Ultra 128gb
large deep TL with 20 video tracks and 12 audio tracks
copy stereo wav clip from TL Ver 1 and try to paste into TL ver Promo which is basically the same track layout
paste refuses to work. ? ! ? #### !!!!
after several tries, I finally see that A track 6 is locked in the Promo TL I'm trying to paste into. The source TL ver 1 had the clip in track 6 - this was just random chance of source vs destination. However I couldn't paste into Promo TL. No errors, no indicators why it's not working, it just looks like a bad bug / failure.
Once I unlock A track 6 in Promo TL, then the paste operation magically works.
Besides the fact we should have working usable simple reliable track targets that let you paste into the tracks you set to go into... at the very least either through up a dialog saying something like paste operation doesn't match copy source track(s)... or paste into the next higher or lower appropriate track via dialog asking the user what their pref is... or worst behavior is to paste into any matching track starting top down and if you clobber an existing track, well undo and try again.
Yes I get it there are times you want to protect tracks from all operations via the locks which is generally what you want, so please make some changes so that the user knows what's going on, that they can then complete the operation one way or the other.
of course this brings up the often beat on problem of track targeting. stop making it fancy and smart because it usually fails and gets it wrong most of the time. just let the user set the track targets and thats it. if there aren't enough tracks targeted then that part of the media or clips doesn't get pasted - like using only 1 audio track of 4 from a camera clip, or NO audio tracks when using camera clip as B roll, or the sound is just junk...
Bonus Bug : copying of audio from one TL to another also copies its TRACK automation. In this case that automation SHUT OFF the track Bus assignment. So the track has levels, but no output. Thats from moving I think from a 4.0 track with 2.0 clip to 2.0 target TL. This is a really poisonous bug because there is zero indication in the UI anywhere this just happened unless by dumb luck or you are super knowledgeable about the Fairlight page that you just pasted automation like this.
2nd Bonus Bug : Trying to enable the Bus output in the track mixer fails. it won't enable. why ? well because you just invisibly pasted automation to turn it OFF, the UI isn't telling you anything in any way this happened. For anyone who doesn't really know Fairlight well this looks like a bad failure / bug and they will likely do various tries to work around the problem.
