Magic Mask 2 : I'll make it

PostWed Jun 04, 2025 7:48 pm

Hey

As an huge ultimatum, I'm taking advantage of the MM2 in Resolve 20... using it INSTEAD of doing regular green screen keys.
Yes, 90% of the clips are green screens scenes, yes, I could key as usual (I've been doing this for yeeaaars on Fusion and Nuke btw), but I decided to give it a try on a mid-low budget ad, and to report main issues here if possible.
Not only because the young crew screwed up the shootings I must tell - for I could make it anyway - but really to use a real case study for a no deadline project (meaning I could go back to usual comp anyway)
PS : this is not specifically for BMD, but feel free to read as well :D , because I won't cheat and think it's really interesting. (my opinion, I'm not sure this will interest anyone tbh :) )
PS2 : no, it's not to demonstrate anything, because even if things go fairly well, I'm still deeply convinced MM is not to replace key comps (on the other hand, use it to reach the goal faster, hmmm)
PS3 : it's under light NDA

Briefly, everything ingested in Resolve, tidied up, specific TLs etc.
[=> Here 4 people quietly and slowly walk together towards the camera; looking around as a bit surprised by the surroundings, pretty much side by side (quiet and no quick moves)]

First report @ the start :

- Yes, MM2 tracking time is slower (than MM1), but I finally don't think it's a huge issue here, because yes as well, it seems to "better figure out" where real life boundaries stands; it also looks like it makes better choices - way better actually - in the field of occlusion going in and out, huge great point imho...
In this case, when even 2 arms went top and under, MM1 could take off and never land back, here MM2 is relevant, good point;

- I don't want to be too much focused on Fu comps - MM2 is Resolve only, not features by Fusion Studio :cry: - but in Fusion, I would save any node settings with desired parameters as defaults in 2 clicks : for ex. a polygon should appear disconnected... Now how could I save say "better" parameters of MM2 in Color so that the Smart Refine level would default to 10 and not 30 ? Please anybody be aware that 30 would introduce matte flickering where and when there's no need to. Any test proves it;

- not important but : is it actually possible ti change the color of the mask overlay ? I was sure I was reponsible of not double-clicking somewhere but now I'm not so sure... You can toggle power windows masks "looks", this shouldn't be difficult is it ?

- [again, hope it's not me] Could we choose PR 4444 as a quick export option from the color page, at least when MM is involved ? Basic but probably very handy

See you next time folks, thx for those who took time to read ;)
