DR20 can't relink files

PostWed Jun 04, 2025 4:15 pm

Current project is edited on SSD. After edit, the file are moved to a storage drive. Sometimes I need to reference an old edit and when doing so I need to relink the clips to the storage hard drive. I've been doing this for years. DR20 doesn't let me relink the missing files. See pic. I clearly have dozens of missing clips. When clicking relink media it says I only have 1 missing clip, with no way to replace the red missing clips on the timeline. Any suggestions? Did the relink media workflow change in DR20?

It looks like Resolve 20 has changed how relinking works. Even though you see a bunch of missing clips, it might only show one in the Relink window.

Here’s what to try:

In the Media Pool, right-click one of the red clips and choose “Relink Selected Clips.”

If that doesn’t work, drag the correct file from your storage drive into the timeline to manually replace it.

Make sure your drive is added in Preferences > Media Storage so Resolve can find the files.

I hope this helps :)

Previous timelines are now completely useless in DR20.

There is no option to relink multiple media files when many files are selected.

Dragging and dropping the files from their new location in Windows Explorer into the media pool does not replace the duplicated files. Instead it leaves the original edits as missing and adds the new files side by side.

With no way to update an old timeline with files that have moved, tweaking a previous edit or grabbing a few already polished clips is impossible. This is a HUGE problem.

Select the missing clips in the bin>right click>Clip Operations>Relink Selected Clips...

Woah, why is it there? Thank you very much for letting me know where they moved it to.

So they made a common feature harder to find. This is incredibly frustrating. If it's not broke, don't fix it! Changes and improvements to the software should not include user workflow changes for items that aren't part of the improvement.

Joe and I are in agreement on this, and I complained about this early on.

The dev team explained they were trying to "simplify" the dropdown menus with fewer choices, but I think the problem there is, 90% I wind up doing on the Media page IS relinking clips, so putting that choice 2 or 3 layers deep in the right-click menu just slows me down. What we CAN do is to make that a shortcut, so you can select lots of missing clips, then hit the keys for the "Relink Selected Clips" shortcut, and then get the right results.

The shortcut is a good workaround. "Simplify" isn't the correct description when you move menu items. So frustrating.

When this guy makes a strong point you really should listen, Dev Team.

My guess? A cleaner right click menu, moving less common operations to a unified secondary menu.

While I also got tripped up by the change, now that I know, I think it's an improvement. :)

Since it’s coming up here again… I agree with trying to simplify the menus but generally I believe people think in verbs not nouns.

As in a relink menu with items it’s easier to find than a clip submenu because people are trying to DO something (verb) rather than looking for an object to see what they can do to it.
