BMPCC + Hypergonar HiFi2 Anamorphic Lens !!!

PostSat Mar 15, 2014 3:38 pm

I've been working on my anamorphic lens & adapter for the last few weeks and have finally finished it. The lens was in great condition for its age. The image was soft when we first got it and thought somethings not right. I then opened her up, cleaned, re-greased, realigned the front & rear optics. Now it's sharp as a razor. Here's a few pics of the build, footage coming soon. :)

Awesome, been looking to do the same with my Kowa 2x. A glue gun and some metal spokes is all that was needed to get a double focusing mechanism going well but I would like to rehouse a set of them properly for use on a pro film shoot.
May I ask what is your goal for this project?

Good job!

I´ve the same lens,is a heavy one. You could build a new body for the lenses, because most of the weight is on the metal.

I use it just for close ups:

The main goal was to mount the lens and shoot some awesome 2.35:1 footage. :D I think most 2x anamorphic lenses have some weight to them, but I can't complain the footage is amazing and worth the extra efforts. I've been treating it like the old 35mm adapter days, just half the weight.

I've thought about making a new housing for both elements, but this would require a lot of work. The boring & drill/tap process took longer than expected. If I was to ever do this again, I'd bring it to the CNC. Below is the adapter ring bored to a 72mm and setup with 6 1/4-20" form tapped holes. The adapter/bore also has a machined step to prevent the anamorphic lens crashing into any of the back focus lenses.

You never will get 2.35 with anamorphic x2.
From 4:3 you got 2.66:1 and you´ll need this kind of film gate to get 2.39:1:
http://rafcamera.com/media/catalog/prod ... ate_ao.jpg

Or crop!
http://files.tested.com/photos/2013/11/ ... atios3.png

BMC is 16:9 like the C image=3.55:1. Need the D image:
http://www.davidmullenasc.com/apertures3P.jpg

I think only Alexa can shot 4:3 and still need crop a little bit to 2.39:1.

keep in mind,anamorphic 4 perf is 2.39:1 ;)

have fun!

Good info. ! Based on what I've read the BMPCC is closer to a 1.78 and believe the HiFi2 I own was from a 16mm projector. I figured this combination would jive nice. Here's how I put it together below, please correct me if I'm wrong. If the BMPCC is shooting at 1.78 and using a 2x squeeze this is how it would look visually ?

Your Hypergonar looks like a 35mm projector as the mine.

From 16:9 sensor size you´ll get super wide.
1.78x2=3.56
Like this:
http://i.ytimg.com/vi/rRk5kgrfGBs/0.jpg

Use this one with circle as reference to unsqueeze:
http://wibarron65.net/images/trivia_files/tvpat.gif

I did a 4:3 transparent mask on the BM screen to have an idea for when crop in post.

16:9 is an aberration of modern TV  Please BM,back to 4:3 sensor size and let me choice the aspect ratio
I think a big 4:3 sensor is the best way for filmmakers. We can use Academy,16:9,Techniscope or anamorphic.

Other way is film in vertical with x2 anamorphic....mmmm...I´ve to try it

As a new comer to anamorphics have those screen grabs been squeezed correctly?

I don't think so, but they look cool nonetheless. I'm interested to see how well this works.

Yeah those are not correct. They need to be stretched %200 or squeezed %50 to a 3.56 aspect and then cropped down to 2.39 etc... Looks like these were un-squeezed to 2.39.

I agree, I'm just curious because in the earlier HIFI2 hacking video that someone shared in the thread.

They open it up and move the element closer claiming that it is now 1.5x instead of 2x.

Is this really possible and can it be done with other adapters?

On the screen grabs above it looks like resolves 1.3x squeeze being used?

Yep those images haven't been been unsqueezed properly.
A x2 Anamorphic says it all, you either need to multiply the width by 2 or divide the height by 2.
The x2 anamorphics on a 16:9 sensor will give you an aspect ratio of 3.55:1.
I've found that you can get away with 2.93:1 (you get this by multiplying the height by 2.93), which is an early version of Ultra Panovision (Ben Hur).
You simply cannot make the adaptor be something it isn't, just because you want it to.

The only way to make a x2 or x1.5 anamorphic fit into another desired aspect ratio is to use a camera that shoots something other than 16:9 or you need to crop the sides off. Now you can do this inside your NLE, but this will mean that you are zooming into the image & so you'll lose resolution. If you're shooting RAW you could chop off the sides in Photoshop etc..., which would mean you could just unsqueeze the footage.

I think so.

Anamorphic lens has "breathing focus",it means that to get close focus the cylindrical block displace each to other with the consequent change of aspect ratio. Hence anamorphic primes just focus to 1m.
This is call "mump" or "fat face effect"
http://www.theasc.com/magazine/sept03/s ... image1.jpg

So,if you want focus to infinite with a x2 lens, you´ll need move the elements to his original place. can´t focus infinite closing the elements to x1.6 has I did in my video. This "trick" is just for close ups.

Luv the info. everyone, keep it coming. Please feel free to add or talk about any anamorphic stuff, I'm really diggin this !!!! I'm not sure what happened to the stills, maybe the Google compressor I uploaded them on. The final should have been 1920 x 540, those do look a little stubby. Here's a short test video (no CC). Let me know what you guys think

Thx guys !!!! It was definitely a lot of work to get everything up and running, but I'm loving the results. The guy that sold us the anamorphic lens has a few more HiFi2, but the need some luv. I think the guy only wanted $150 - $200 each... If interested I'll ask him if he still has them. My +1,+2,+4,+10 CU's just showed up, I'll have more video soon. Hi guys...I am looking for the anamorphic look as well. I understand the logic behind 16x9...but not sure if I understand the math to determine the image capture size...

What would the metabones speed booster do to the image on a 2X anamorphic adapter?

For example
BMPCC>SB>Sigma 30mm>step up ring+clamp>2X Hypergonar Berthiot 16mm S.T.O.P

Does the Sigma 30mm become a 52.2mm (using 1.74 SB crop factor) lens shooting into the anamorphic adapter? Is that a good size?

Thanks!

In other words...does the magnified sensor from SB reduce black bars? A 2X Anamorphic is too thin for BMPCC.
