New commercial Shimano shot on BMCC (EF)

PostThu Apr 10, 2014 11:07 am

Hey all!

This month I've been shooting a new commercial (<- is this even the right term for this kind of film?) for Shimano. Their advertising agency 'Doorrood' asked me to film and edit this film.
We had a 3 week trip throughout Europe. We also did some interviews with the pro cyclers (Geraint Thomas, Daryl Impey and Jens Voigt). I loved filming with the BMCC EF 2.5K. I filmed all of it in RAW, the final edit is in 1080 x 1920 (anamorphic 1.33).

Only the shots with the helicopter and some slomo shots where taken with the Sony FS700.

Since I've filmed it all with the BMCC 2.5K I thought I'd share the film with you:)!

Have fun watching!

Hey Joas,

Lovely stuff. I'm a very keen cyclist and huge fan of the sport so I'm very jealous - this would have been my ideal project.

Great to see such a strong use of the BMCC - after all my problems with my 4K and the (justified) negativity on this forum it's great to be reminded of what the original camera is capable of.

Thanks! I see the BMCC 2.5K as a part of my total camera. The machine is good in capturing nice pictures. You have to add some stuff to make the camera work.

Btw, Geraint Thomas and his assistent made a short film with an iphone of the day we filmed him:

Really nice looking film, you should be very proud of it.

On the BMCC shots, were they taken with a helicopter drone, or from a car? How did you stabilize them? They look great.

Thanks! Most of the shots where taken from my bus. I didn't have to stabilise those pictures, just find a smooth road ;). And some teleshots where made with the 70-200mm 2.8 Canon with stabilisation (perfect lens!).

Thank you:)! I crop in post, but thats easy with 2.5K. But while shooting I put my viewfinder (Alphatron) into Anamorphic mode (well.. you just see 2 lines in your screen haha).

This is really really nice. Loved it.

One small thing is that I felt the first half of the clip was really hot... As in the highlights. Towards the end it was perfect... may have been because the sun wasn't so high in the sky during your shoot.

But please don't let this take away from the great work you did here. I think it was brilliantly executed and you guys had the perfect voice for the voiceover.

Congrats. It looked like a fun shoot.

Thank you! Also thanks for you honesty, you're right about the highlights. The original footage the pictures are not hot. But because I put some filters over it, it happend. There was very little time for editing and colouring. Too bad, I wish I had much more time :). The basic I do with Davinci Resolve, then some filter programmes in Premiere Pro CC. In the future I want to make the filters in Davinci Resolve only. But at the moment Im just not quick enough haha.

From every film I make I learn, so thank you for your honesty. I always want to get better, Im never perfect!!

Thank you all for your compliments!

No worries brother. We're all in the same boat, trying to improve on our craft. Btw that last shot was epic. I'm a cyclist as well and you really captured the spirit of cycling.

I really like the way this came together; the visuals, the copy, the voiceover, the music... nicely done. I especially liked watching how a diversity of riders faced and overcame different challenges. :-)

Mooi werk Joas :)

Indeed a great reminder that the original BMCC can do wonders if treated right.

Stunning! The film was a little preachy and redundant with its content, but the images are very, very nice. I suppose it's only preachy because if one were to shoot someone like myself for a commercial, it would be of a fat guy in an easy chair with a beer in one hand an a bag of Doritos in the other. Probably not what the customer was after. lol

After reading all the problems folks are having with this camera over and over on this forum, it's easy to forget just how gorgeous the images the BMCC produces are. Great job. Congratulations!!

+1 on the overexposure stuff.

What frame rate were you filming at for the very first shot?

Also some weird artifacts happening on the rider in the foreground around 1:41? Maybe its just my computer but it looks like some kind of twixtor-fail type thing going on?

Otherwise very cool.
