Hey bro, great capture.
I shoot performances too, so I also deal with negative space above and below the performers.
To combat this I've started my own technique to tone down the volume on the non-active areas.
(I want to claim this as my own invention/idea, but it's possible people have done it before.)
I use crumblepop to blur the upper and lower parts of the air above the performers and the audience below, which invariably get captured in long, wide shots. I've had compliments on it, as it helps hide the distractions caused by the audience moving around, bald spots, and basically force focus onto the performers. Here's an example;
Top image is the original, middle is with the blurring technique, or "shrink ray" effect, bottom is just an undersaturated area to show where the blurring is.
In this particular example, I'm shooting down from up high, but I normally do the opposite, so this technique also helps hide stage lights and ceilings. Of course, the shrink ray is nothing new, but I haven't seen anyone else use it in a performance capture setting before. You might like it, might not, just wanted to share!
