non-compatible to 35/1.4L and 85/1.2L

PostFri Nov 09, 2012 1:48 am

Marco Solorio of OneRiver Media posted at his blog as follow:

Unfortunately at this time (Cinema Camera version 1.1), not all Canon lenses work with the EF model. I have quite a large collection of Canon L lenses and all but two work with the Cinema Camera, which includes the 85mm f/1.2L (probably Canon’s sharpest lens they’ve ever made) and the 35mm f/1.4L. Because the 85mm focuses electronically (I’ve always hated that feature, even on my Canon DSLRs), it requires a protocol that BMD hasn’t figured out yet (I’m assuming Canon isn’t going to just hand that kind of information out). So with the 85mm, there’s no focus, and no aperture control at this time. With the 35mm, no aperture control at this time (but focus works fine).

Will BMD address this issue regarding compatibility?

Seriously bad news. This would get me to cancel my orders. I can deal with a delay but If don't have assurance of compatibility with these lenses, this is a deal breaker.

I was so looking forward to using the 85/1.2L as a telephoto. Depressed.

Is the mount licensed or reverse engineered? Can this be fixed through firmware or is it a physical issue with the mount? I feel like I just got kicked in the stomach.

the 24-70 (mk1) also has the same issue.
the 50 f/1.2 and the 135 f/2 have no iris control problems, as with all of my zeiss

also don't forget Canon had a few mount compatibility issues themselves when the 1d (mk1) came out, as have lens manufacturers from time to time...

That is bizarre. Fortunately I went with the rokinon 35mm 1.4 and rokinon 85mm 1.4 so its fine for me but maybe there needs to be a confirmed lens thread.

Maybe we can build a database if there isn't one:

//EDIT - i've started to add what people have posted
//EDIT - i'm also gonna add lenses that COULD potentially be an issue or not based on that they don't have full time mechanical manual focus operation, as per indicated in this chart - http://www.usa.canon.com/app/pdf/lens/EFLensChart.pdf
if anyone can confirm or deny the orange or blue lenses, i would appreciate it! If you have a particular lens (made by canon) not on the list, let me know as well.

70-200 2.8L should be good. Saw some UK footage that wasnt Bloom's where a guy was using it, though for the life of me I now can't find it. I'm sure I found on this forum though. Also Rick Lang in Perth I think was using it.

Huh, I just read it and don't understand. He says the 35 1.4 has electronic aperture control. Don't they all have that??
And if it does only work wide open, how did he get the test shots at F2.8 andF5.6?

IF we're reporting here, then add the 28/1.8 to the list.

The 50/1.4, 85/1.4, and Sigma 20/1.8 work fine. I also believe the 24/1.4 works fine as well.

you put the lens on a canon body, use the DoF preview, then remove the lens. but the FF and RW buttons don't control the Iris. if you don't 'pre-set' the aperture on the canon body, you're 'stuck' shooting it wide open.

Marco provided some more information on his blog (thanks Marco if you're reading!):

24mm f/1.4L II
35mm f/1.4L (no aperture control)
50mm f/1.2L
85mm f/1.2L II (no focus and aperture control)
135 f/2L
8-15mm f/4L
16-35 f/2.8L II
24-105 f/4L
100-400 f/4.5-5.6L
Sigma 8-16 f/4.5-5.6
Sigma 18-250 f/3.5-5.6
Canon 2X Teleconverter (passes pin data fine to compatible lenses)

I don’t think there’s any kind of licensing issue, just a different lens protocol BMD needs to figure out, which I’m confident they will do.

Here are my thoughts...

If BMD was able to figure out the IS (Image Stabilization) protocol to allow that feature to work with the Cinema Camera, I'm quite confident they'll be able to add these couple of (currently) "non-compatible" lenses with the rest of them. For what ever reason, these two lenses have a different protocol for aperture control than the other Canon lenses (focus protocol on the 85mm aside). At any rate, the camera is only at version 1.1 and there's bound to be unforeseen hiccups along the way like this. Me? I'm definitely not worried... these guys are smart and am confident they can update the protocol to make these couple of lenses work. Until then, I'm enjoying the freedom of full manual operation anyway! These Rokinons ain't bad!

I updated an edit at the end of the blog that mirrors my thoughts in this post.

Cheers!

Thanks again Marco, so far it seems like there are 4 reported lenses not working, hopefully they're not all using a different protocol and BMD can sort it out fairly easily.

Canon's Pancake 40mm F2.8 lens - most likely not okay since it has electronic focusing like the 85mm F1.2

Then why do they use that lens in all of their product photos and demos I have seen at NAB and elsewhere...?

Wasn't that the 24-105mm F4.0 "L" lens?

Guys.

As far as I know, it's ONLY the lenses that focus by wire that don't work.

That's a tiny handful of lenses, most notably the 85mm.

I've used most of the lenses you'd want to use, including the 24-70, 70-200, and most of the wider L primes.

They've had to reverse engineer ALL of the EF lens protocols from scratch. Something that took other EF mount adaptor manufactures a lot longer than it took BMD. This also includes IS as well, which is also separate, as well as AF.

They're certainly aware of the need to address it, and you should expect to see focus by wire lenses supported with future firmware updates.

Thanks for the info John!
Two people so far reported the 24-70 mk1 not working for them, but it worked for you?
Either way, sounds like it shouldn't be a big problem for BMD to solve. Good for people to know what's not working until it is sorted though i guess. Cheers!

Hm, well to be honest I'm not that familiar with the Canon genealogy. Does the MK1 have focus by wire ? I've used a 24-70, but it was not a focus by wire.

No, i don't think the mk1 is focus by wire (pretty sure mine doesn't need camera power to allow manual focus) but it's the aperture control that seems to have issue like the 35/1.4:

What about the 28mm 1.8? Someone reported that it was having trouble but the 50mm 1.4 wasn't.

Looking at this chart:
http://www.usa.canon.com/app/pdf/lens/EFLensChart.pdf
It seems that any lens without *2 in the "AF Actuator" column probably have issues. But there's a couple that do have mechanical full time manual focus that people have found issue with aperture control anyway (like the 35/1.4, 24-70/2.8, 28/1.8).

Something throwing me off is that 10-22/3.5-4.5 and 17-85/4-5.6 have been confirmed working but don't have a *2 on the list. Is it because they're APS-C lenses so maybe have a different protocol that's already been reversed engineered?

Would be good if i can at least add some potential trouble makers to the list from this chart so people are aware until it's resolved.

That's so confusing to me. The 28mm 1.8 is a USM EF just as the 50mm 1.4. I have both lenses and they certainly do look related to me...I have to read the ring to tell them apart. I was sure hoping the 28 would be my normal and the 50 would make a good low light portrait lens.
